I threw this in the CRT section for now to get good traffic. It can be removed later if so desired.

I've home networked many XP's before with out major problems but windows 7 is a real pain. If I can't succeed in this then I may just wipe the win7 pc's and reload XP. But I thought with more heads involved we could find out what the problem is. I've burned up google and tried many things and I'm thinking it's something I'm just missing.

Anyways, I'll keep this short for now and just respond if it's something I already tried.

4 PC's involved, 2 with XP/SP3 and 2 with Win7.

No problem with the 2 XPs seeing and accessing each other

The 2 Win 7's see each other but only 1 will access the other. The other is denied access. I tried a bunch of stuff here but I don't want to cloud the post with that so just shoot suggestions.

The 2 XP's can see the win 7's but not access them. The wins 7's cannot even see the XP's.

I have the win 7's set to work network and have renamed them as MSHOME. They were not seen by the XP's until I did this.

I have also set the permissions to full in both win 7's. Also tried turning off firewalls.

Connections are wireless and hard wired, 1 each for each OS.

SO, any suggestions?

On the Windows 7 machines go to the "network and sharing center" and then to the advanced sharing settings. For compatibility with windows XP you have to switch back to 40-56bit encryption (see bellow).

I remember having an issue with this way back when it first came out but cant remember what it was.

Keep trying, cause although XP ( and specifically XP x64 ) is exceptionally good, Windows 7 is more capable.

How have you set your IPs for each PC and also the gateway?

Its alot easier if you set it all manually, its pretty simular on both.

Try typing in the address of a shared file on one of the other computers, i cant remember how to do that now.... I think its ///computer name/folder name etc... Something like that... But i cant remember now...

I have read where this may be an option but I don't want this setup to be complicated.

Upon further tries I came to this.

If I go back and name all 4 the same and the same workgroup, and reinstall the network system, I would get the XP's to be able to see all 4, would access between the XP's but not access the Win 7's. The win 7's would just see each other and access each other fine.

If I then rebooted my modem and router, to reset the ip's, the XP's would then only see and access each other but not see the win 7's. But the win 7's would then see all 4 and access each other but not the XP's.

So concluding they could see each other at times but not access, then I'm guessing it's a difference in the file system and how the different networks access the file systems.

What annoys me is that with all the crap they write into these operating systems, why couldn't they just put in a couple check boxes to network with earlier operating systems, and make them work together, even if it's at the earlier OS options and pace.

Networking between OS's should not be this difficult for the average user.

So I've decided to load all 4 with the same OS and had to choose. So after weighing the pros and cons I decided to go with XP for what I'm using them for. We'll see what happens.

what you could try

1] Make sure the Guest account is enabled. Alternatively (what I do) have accounts on both computers with the same username and same password

2] For testing, leave the firewalls off

3] You already put the Win7 machines in the "Work" type network connection

4] make sure you share some folder, with both the Security AND ALSO the Shared/Security settings for the folder set so that "Everyone" has "Full" access.

5] I'd suggest testing with \\ip-address\share to ignore possible hostname-problems.

I've got it working both ways (win7 <-> xp) so it can be done.
I'm also running a (Linux) Samba server with a simple NT-domain, Win7 indeed requires some tweaking to work as backwards compatible as Microsoft said it would Wink

6] Oh yeah, I've got in the Win7 adv.sharing settings:
Network discovery OFF
File/print sharing ON
public folder sharing OFF
128 bit encryption only ON
password protected sharing ON
homegroup NOT managed by windows, so by useraccounts.

7] Last but not least, I've imported this registry file for my Linux Samba compatibility in Win7.
Not sure if it would help with XP connectivity

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanmanWorkstation\Parameters]
"DomainCompatibilityMode"=dword:00000001
"DNSNameResolutionRequired"=dword:00000000

... ofcourse there's a lot of other things that can go wrong as well Wink

I have a network of Win XP, Win 7 and Linux PCs, and they can exchange files between them.
The Win 7 PCs do not use Homegroup, and all the Windows PCs are in the same workgroup.
And each user account on the Win7 PCs have a password. File sharing on Win7 PCs does not seem to like it when there is no password.

Regards
