Just a quick note to CRT users.

I had a customer in Holland who had a tired worn out 808s who purchased some of my New P16LXV tubes 8 inch tubes with the high rez P19lug gun we had made up special.

I gave him some new hardware to strip out the old Sony Tubes.

A new product for this year.

He completed the new mods, upgraded the required the neck cards to accept the extra grid, purchase the internal HDMI card.

Side by Side with SONY 4k projector ( $26,000 projector)

Result Barco won !

Greg, I'd love to hear the details of the shootout between the modded Barco and the Sony 4k. I've seen the Sony in person, and while I can't say I was blown away or anything by it, it's still very good. I'm a little surprised that even a highly modded 8-inch tube machine and lenses would give it such a decisive win. Is there a detailed writeup anywhere of the machines, the shootout, etc.?

Some shots side by side onto the same screen would be great.

It took some work because the 808S had Sony tubes. So the neck cards had to be totally rewired.

The new 8 inch tubes uses a P19lug gun and this gun has been made better over the years to give increased brightness and sharpness over the old P19lug that was used. The older 8 inch guns are no longer made so it made sense to just use the 9 inch P19lug gun.

The result is a new upgraded 8 inch tube with a very sharp picture. The problem is that it will require a very heavy upgrade to the neck card. It required the focus coil to be cut to move it up as the old Sony tubes were longer.

The RGB driver 800MHZ opamps were replaced with low noise GHZ range ones.

Neck card had power supply mods

Switcher card had the entire video chain upgraded and internal HDMI

So this projector was heavily modified.

It was also outfitted with Color corrected lens HD145 and some other convergence updates.

I will try to get some pictures.

The final call was the CRT was equal to the 4k Sony but the CRT produced a far more realistic picture and color was better.

I will try to get some photos I was impressed with the installer and how well it was calibrated.

How much does a total makeover for a BG808s cost? (not that i could pay it)

Not forgetting digital wil never achieve the full black , fade in fade out and low key scene of a CRT currently. And that is why we are stil playing CRT long live the king.

Sony 1000 is very bright projector it can handle 160" screens without hesitation. Unfortunately pays a lower performance on blacks respect to JVC and CRTs of course. I think it has the best optics available for human prices, then the 4k resolution make it very sharp and detailed. Talking about colors you have to make a shootout with a lumagen radiance with the new 125 point cms feature.

You can bet on, even in 3D. About blacks I said JVC is better, but only if you take the top model with a screen not too big (for JVC)

Ummm,

Can it be, that one is writing about the Sony VPL-VW1000ES (LCD digital, 2000 ANSI Lumen, 4K Resolution) and the other is talking about the Sony VPH1000QM (CRT analog, 500 PEAK Lumen, 480i Resolution)?

With 1700 ANSI lumens you can light up a a 160'' screen no problem at all. I do a 146'' screen for 3d on my 5010 on 1000 lumens cinema mode 3d and is bright enough to look bright enough with the glasses on. I don't doubt the sony can fill up that size of a screen boasting 2000 ANSIlumens i attempted a 220' screen with a movie mate 60 and I still thought it looked pretty good. It should be a piece of cake Wink for it. The catch is that contrast will suffer.

Yes and is the official name of the 4k. Outside of AR, does anyone even care to remember the CRT version?

Last year at Cedia, it was on a pretty big screen. Crabb may remember better, but I think it was 15 to 18 feet. I thought it looked good, but the sources were holding it back.

Im sure you can, ive got a Sony VPL CW125 on a 240 inch screen, but a Sony VPH 1000 is 500 lumens, not 1,700.

I can look back at my photo collection to see, but my recollection is that there were about 4-5 rows of 10 seats across, and the screen covered most of that width - so yeah - I'd guess something around 160- or 170-inch diagonal, or about 12-13 feet wide. "Up to 200-inch screen" is what they were pushing in the marketing, but that's 15 feet wide. I don't think they were running it quite that big at CEDIA.

And yes, it was definitely limited by source material. I was also sitting way too far back to enjoy the 4k at probably close to 2x screen widths. That's too far back to really see the big difference between 1080p and 4k.

Stop it! The only person here talking about a VPH1000 is you. That projector hasn't been relevant for at least 10 years.
