is there a common thing to look for when a set like this streaks?
For instance, bringing up the on screen menu, It streaks off to the right..whites have a green streak in general.
Do I just need to check all voltages with respect to the service manual?
Or, is this a capacitor issue? Or something else?
Any thoughts?
Ben

hmm, green streaking off of white... I remember a buddies old tv that did the same thing, the picture tube was just worn out from the usage it had gotten...
Dont know for sure if thats your issue.. but how much use to you put on the TV? My best guess (and you probably shouldnt go by it either) is the picture tube is worn out.
If I remember correctly the KD-34XBR910 was an earlier predacessor to the KD-34XBR960/970, and my 970 is already a 8 year old TV,... WOW... 8 years already... I remember the day we took the "display model" back to the shop to get the actual new TV and the guys there didnt know we even had their floor model they gave us to use!
if mine is 8, yours is probably 9 or 10 years old, so it wouldnt be totally impossible to have the PT wearing out. My Sony 27" before the 970 was 15 years old, and until I got the 970,... I STILL thought it had a good picture on it (despite the fact that it was probably the worst PQ I have observed and just didnt realize it)
Anyway... hope someone here can be of actual assistance to you!

I don't think it's wearing out..I just got it yesterday for free...hoping I can fix it.
I think there's an overvoltage somewhere...I need to track down the service manual.

Do you have a pattern generator or a test dvd that you can just display individual color to see if it's on all 3 or just 1 color?
Try facing the tv east/west and see if it affects it.

the orientation doesn't seem to matter...I'll see if it's one color or not.
It seems like exactly what can happen on a crt when capacitors on the neck board start to go bad...I'm wondering what the equivalent repair on a crt is. I suppose there is some sort of neck board on it...I'll investigate later tonight.
I'll grab a picture of the screen too...
if anyone can help me get the service manual, let me know.

Curt told me he's seen that on Sony D50's when the capacitors go bad on the neck board. Not sure if it's applicable here but we all know capacitors....plus that's a what?? 2002-2003 model? That was when those bad capacitors were floating around the market.

a couple of new observations...
it seems to streak green in dark picture areas and red in bright picture areas...no blue seems to streak.
WHen I turn the set on, it makes an unusual sound...very hard to describe. It only lasts for a few seconds though...
Also when I turn the set on, it looks like the brightness control is set way high....wayyy high, just for a few seconds, and then it seems to adjust. Perhaps the adjustment in picture accounts for the strange sound. Almost sounds like firing up a table saw, but at a much lower volume.
I think there is too much voltage going to the screen...the guy said that lightning fried the tv a while back and he had a significant repair...I'm thinking that repairman didn't quite set the various voltages after replacing whatever it was he replaced.
thoughts?

A lightening strike victim. Lots of luck with that one.
Is the sound you are hearing at start up just the degaussing circuit?

on closer inspection...perhaps red and blue are streaking together on light and green on dark.
nobody has a service manual? I think someone gave me one on here a few years ago, the last time I owned one of these...never throw anything out is what my dad says...damn!

looks like there is a setting for screen voltage...but other than that, it must be capacitors...I hope.

if the problem improves over time..does that also suggest caps?

Hey Nash,
I've looked at a lot of 'em...some are bent, which I've read could mean they are failing...
but the thing is...I need to know which ones are the most likely ones to have failed. The equivalent of the neck boards, perhaps? Whatever boards are attached where the neck boards would be on a projector?
Could be the deflection circuitry as well, I suppose.
Would a screen shot be of interest to anyone?

so, it would only be the electrolytics that I should be concerned with? Not the ceramics?
ONe other note...I put up a resolution pattern and the tv didn't really show the detail...but a few hours later, the detail was there. Something is definitely benefitting from warmup...maybe there is too much wrong with this thing. But, they are magic when they look good.

They are like a 34" VGA monitor when they are working right

AR have you seen a 34xbr960 with the SFP tube? Just wondering if it would be worth picking up over my xbr970 which I hears was the 34HS420 rebadged as an XBR and given a HD tuner and a paint job? lol

The 960 had a sharper tube than the 970 from what I remember reading. ......and to answer your question yes pick it up. We all need more CRT's. Then you can do a side by side.
