I've read a lot of threads, but can't find a clear consensus on this meter. I'm not looking to start a debate, just want to know if it is accurate. I will likely be using HCFR.

Thank You.

I currently have a Spyder 3, but I have never been able to confirm it's accuracy and it's now a few years old. The Spyder 4 pro is on sale right now for under $150, seemed reasonable if it doesn't have the inconsistency issues that plagued the 3.

That is an excellent deal! However is that meter just a re-branded i1 Display 2? Or am I wrong? I had hoped the Spyder 4 Pro was possibly a better meter than a Display 2.

Derick from Spectracal Quote

It is a SpectraCal C3 built for us by X-Rite. Yes it does look like a D2 but it is basically the guts of a Chroma 5 with updated filters. The C3 is designed for flat panels in contact mode. So basically you are getting a meter that has improved accuracy for a fraction of the price. It is targeted as a affordable entry level meter.

I have C5 and its a good meter. Sot his will be even better and I paid a lot more the the C5

Very nice! I think I am sold, but can I use that meter with HCFR? I am very familiar with it, and as good as CalMan software is, I just can't afford it.

The Probe comes with Calman Software!!!!!

It wont work with HCFR until the new fork they are building might be able to use it. If its the C 5 guts then I think
They added that in the new Fork. I haven't read through the whole thread.

I have the Spyder 4, but last i tested it didn't work right with HCFR, they removed the option to adjust the read time with dark level, so you cant repeat your 0-30 IRE and get the same result. And from what i was told at the time they couldn't change that.

The Spyder 3 is working fine with the old HCFR.

And if you buy a spyder probe, buy the cheapest one.. they are all the same.. Elite-- Pro and so on is just different software.

You'll Like CalMan I have not tried CalMan 5 but Have CalMan 4 and its very nice.

Chromapure is what I have been using a lot lately. Its more like HCFR in user interface but much easier to understand. If your proficient in HCFR then CalMan will be a breeze for you.

One thing to rememebr with Tri Stimulus Probes. they dont last forever and will drift over time.

Id save up for a Spectro radiometer Probe like the i1 Pro or the Colormunki Spectro( not the cheap tri Stim)
With these you can profile your C3 to it and it will read much faster then the spectro and go darker. Spectros are really better for brighter IRE's, my i1 Pro bounces all over the place below 20 IRE .

I've been using Calman 5 Enthusiast for a couple months now with an i1 Display 3. I find it very easy to use and it works great. The auto cal and 125 point gamut control for my Radiance has really improved the picture in my setup.
