http://mashable.com/2012/10/30/disney-buys-lucasfilm/

Disney announced Tuesday that it is acquiring Lucasfilm LTD, including the Star Wars franchise, for $4.05 billion in stock and cash.

In a press release announcing the acquisition, Disney announced that Star Wars Episode 7 is targeted for a release date in 2015 and that “more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.”

On a conference call, Disney CEO Bob Iger said that in addition to Episode 7, episodes 8 and 9 are also in the works. The goal, Iger said, was to “release a new Star Wars feature film every two to three years.”

This is Disney’s third major brand and studio acquisition in the last ten years. In 2006, the company acquired Pixar for $7.4 billion. In 2009, Disney acquired Marvel for $4 billion.

Lucasfilm co-chairman Kathleen Kennedy will become president of Lucasfilm under Disney and serve as Star Wars brand manager. George Lucas will serve as a creative consultant.

The other subsdiaries of Lucasfilm, LucasArts, Industrial Light & Magic and SKywalker Sound are also moving to Disney. The plan is to keep all Lucasfilm employees at its current San Francisco headquarters.

What no one knows is that Lucas didn't sell the THX division, and will continue to rape Disney every time they want a certification. Smile

(no idea if that's true, but it's a good idea. Smile)

Absolutely outstanding news. I thought Disney did an outstanding job with The Avengers, and I hope they can bring that same level of excellent writing, directing talent, and good acting to the Star Wars franchise. The biggest thing they have going for them is that Lucas won't be directing Smile

The 3 Star Wars trilogies will undoubtedly make one monumental super-trilogy of their own. Interestingly, they have to potential to follow the general story arc of Ep 4-6 in terms of how they met fan's expectations:

- Ep 4-6 were the first act, akin to A New Hope - optimistic, groundbreaking, everything was going well for Lucas, the SW franchise, and fans. The future of SW was bright.
- Then came the second act of EP 1-3 - much like the darker, grittier Empire Strikes Back where things went from great to bad for the Rebellion, fans felt the same way about SW.
- The third act of EP 7-9 has the chance to be the "redemption" trilogy - Disney is here save the SW franchise from the dark and ruinous path that Lucas took it down, much as Luke saved Vader from himself and the Emperor in Return of the Jedi.

Now if only Disney could be convinced to re-do Ep 1-3 from scratch...

+1 to that.

And while they're at it, have Greedo shoot first.

I think that disney is the perfect company to take over locasfilm...

Have you EVER seen a Disney movie that was R*ped to death like the star wars series??? It would not surprise me to see Disney re release EP1-3 in the ORIGINAL awesomeness that it was supposed to be.

The only question I have about this lucasfilm/disney deal.... What about all the Lucasfilm THX Certified products?? Or is george lucas only selling off the film part??

According to this article, it's part of the Lucasfilm portfolio of products:

Quote:
The Lucasfilm tech includes products like THX sound and divisions like Industrial Light and Magic and Skywalker Sound, and a bunch of other cool toys that Disney will also acquire. The LucasArts game studio and other divisions like LucasArts Singapore are included.

I'll be interested to see if they make any changes in how they market or use it.

have Greedo shoot jar-jar binks. I always pictured his head cut off wit ha light saber and flipping through the air with those floppy ears swinging around but i'll settle for a good shot to the gut

I like that. Or have Han shoot first, go right through Greedo, the wall, and into Jar-Jar sitting at a bench on the other side. Problem solved. Mesa happy!

Sorry, I know I am in the minority, but my least favorite character is 3po. It would have been nice if he would have died in the desert on Tat.

no way, can't imagine that. 3PO is an annoying twit but what would R2D2 be without 3PO? 3 is the one who tells you what R2 is saying, and together they make a comedy team. Together they are an important comedic relief to the bad things going on.
JArjar on the other hand serves almost no purpose at all, especially after Episode 1. They should have made him a dope smoking rasta figure, and left him on his home planet stoned out of his mind. Almsot as good as Kals scenario where he takes a gut shot in a bar

I'm with Spanky. I never understood the outrage over Jar Jar. To me, C3PO was just as annoying of a douche bag character to me as Jar Jar.
