|
|
Hello everyone,
I recently got a bunch of McIntosh equipment and i currently have a MC2300 power amp and MX132 that are hooked up together to a pair of Boston Acoustics Lynnfield 400L speakers.
Now, the right channel sounds fine, so does the speaker. The left channel speaker the tweeter is blown, but thats not the issue im having...
On the left channel speaker, when volume goes up, the speaker starts to distort rather easily, and the VU meter for the left channel does not move as much or as far as the right channel VU meter.
Wondering what the cause could be? The speakers are not out of phase, the wire is all A OK...

ok to update, I have been changing the configuration up and I have found that it seems to be the one Boston Acoustic speaker, the midrange moves like its a woofer, while on the other BA it behaves as it should.
It is like the crossover in the one died, and is allowing the low frequencies to pass through to the smaller speakers, which would explain why the tweeter blew out.
The midrange is what is distorting on the speaker. So are there any ideas??

Thanks Nash, I appreciate that advise. I was actually wondering if there were any capacitors in the crossover. Now that I know, I will definitely replace them, in both the crossovers, with film types.
Would you happen to know where I could source a tweeter for boston acoustics? I contacted them and they do not have the tweeter I need anymore, they referred me to a service center in IA, I have not called them yet, but before I get my hopes blown away with bad news, I wanted to see if there was any alternative places?
ebay is at the moment not one of them either

Try Parts Express as well.

The only problem I have with getting a speaker from there is that it more than likely will not physically fit into the assembly that the tweeter goes into. It fits into this metal assembly, actually, best way to tell you is to show you how it looks.
Here is what it physically is shaped as, I found this one on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230587680959
It looks identical, but until the seller emails me back I don't want to buy it since it could be bigger, smaller, etc...
hopefully its the same fit, I can take the grille off it and put mine on there so it looks identical, even if its not the same exact model.
This is the only quam i've ever had about buying speakers, they are a PITA to repair half the time if a driver fails, since its in some odd ball assembly to make it look better or what not.
And... Of course I would pick the pair of HT speakers that has a blown tweeter & bad crossover, thats my luck
Maybe I should see if they still have the 500Ls and the parasound amplifier they were hooked to....
... maybe

Nice Nash, that helps a lot
Just thought I would also let you know, it indeed is the crossover It got HOTTT, BA used their own Mylar capacitors, and 3 of them were melted to a couple of the stone resistors.
A couple are for sure bi-polar, 3 of them im not so sure about, but I am going to pull out the good crossover in the other speaker, and I will post a pic in the morning.
I cannot believe that the woofer and midrange were still working. The tweeter is blown, it doesnt read anything on the ohms scale on the DMM, so I will have to buy the replacement.
It does appear that I can take the driver out of the casing itself and put the new one in this casing so it stays identical in looks as well.
I wonder if the amp these speakers were on is still ok
