Look into the lens. If the tube face is out of focus, then the focus board most likely is bad. I can repair it. I've had a few fail.
Cheers!

Sounds like you need to focus the electron beam but you said focus was good in the center ? Curt is most likely correct.

The focus board on the 'convergence' board tray under the tubes. THe board under the red tube is the controller, the one to the left of that is the convergence, then the astig, and the focus is under the blue tube on the far left. UNscrew it, and email me. To save money, you can take the heavy heat sinks off before shipping.

No, because I don't know what's bad. I need the board here to test and repair it, sorry!
I will be out of town for 2 weeks starting next Saturday, so I could look at it when I get back on about Oct 16.

Hi all, after changing some capacitors on the controller still does not resolve the image geometry.
I do not know what to do for the 909.

I've already told you what needs to be done, but apparently you don't want to do it.

Hi Elpha -
Folks know you are looking for a solution -- but...
There is another pseudo-active thread right now in which several of the most knowledgeable AND generous-with-their-knowledge folks on this site strenuously advocated that all diagnosis and repairs on the 909 be carried out by experienced hands only. I am still a neophyte CRT enthusiast, but this seems to be uniquely (essentially) true to the 909. As Curt *just* obtained some 909 machines from Spanky AND will be setting up a test-bed, so he will be able to help you AND (as everyone here will tell you) will provide his expert service at more-than-fair prices.
If you are going to own a Ferrari, don't expect to service it yourself! BMW, Mercedes and others, perhaps. Those of use who have the CRT equivalent of Fiats can try without worry!
best of luck!
Matt

Ok, I understand, thank you for all your advice, now I'll wait.
Repair at the right price is Good for Ferrari
But if this is another failure?
I'll be patient

I will state it again for the record: THe Sony G90 and the Barco 909/Cine 9 are the hardest sets to repair, as the projectors are very complex. Not many were built, and in both the G90 and the Barcos, the circuits for the most part were completely redesigned from earlier sets, so the procedure to learn how each module works, and how to find defective parts was lengthy. In fact, most problems with the 909 are unique and I can't troubleshoot via email.
I believe at this point that I am about the only person worldwide that works on 909 modules and who has a test chassis. Yes, repairs are twice the price at least of any other CRT projectors, due to the complexity of the modules, and the fact that you won't find a spare 909 on eBay for $500, like you can almost any other set. Still, my repair prices are usually 20% of what it costs to buy a new board from Barco. I don't charge to test working boards, as long as one of the boards you send is defective. Then I charge only for the repair.
YEs, shipping of boards can be expensive, but it's a lot cheaper than sending in your boards for testing than it is to buy a random PC board, hoping that you're guessing correctly as to which board is defective.
My suggestion has been for you to send me several of your boards for testing. I'll put them in a 909 here, and will let you if one or more are defective. If you don't want to send them in, I believe your 909 will sit being defective unless you find another 909 for parts use. THey aren't easy to find.
It's up to you what you want to do.

I hate to pile on elpha, but you may want to read my thread about the 909s. Like I said in that thread, it seemed like every time I messed with the 909s there was an issue. For me, I hated it as I usually enjoyed troubleshooting and fixing my old CRTs. I guess I was lucky as either the 8" pjs I have had were easy to fix or the problems were minor.
Are there any guys still working on CRTs in Europe? If not, then I would box up all of the boards and have Curt give them the once over. It sucks, but these pjs are expensive. If economics is an issue, then (and you may already have one) an 8" might be a better option.
