I changed the bulb in my dlp HL-p5663wx/xaa but it did not work. it was making a whining noise like the bulb or color wheel was going out. How did I figure out what to buy so I don't spend money again that will not fix the problem. I could not get my money back for the bulb when I changed it and spend big money on it at Frys . Thanks for any help

It's my recommendation that you stop now while you're ahead. Almost every other part is going to be far too expensive to buy. These sets are old now to the point where they aren't worth repairing as well.
Samsung also had a bunch of issues with their light engines overheating, and the light engine isn't worth replacing. Throw the bulb on eBay in hopes that someone is looking for a deal on one.
Perhaps Macguyver here has some ideas, but I know he doesn't work on these really at this point.

I had a similar model Samsung. The color wheel needed to be replaced. I did this myself, though. The light ballasts can also go bad.
However, the sets usually blink a code on the power LED. Why replace a bulb without checking that you needed one?
This CAN be fixed, sure, but it's likely NOT worth it. Though if you google the model, there are common problems and solutions posted on it.

We took 2 of these apart a few weeks ago. The lens inside makes a neat wide angle lens on a camera

True.... but sometimes I like to add some general info for future readers. I often find good diagnostic info in old threads by using google.

Very well ..... The blink code usually indicates that the lamp did not ignite. It does not specify whether it's the lamp or the ballast or the power supply... or even the main for that matter. Replacing the lamp is the usual first procedure.
