I already know how some people feel about the white warm up screen on sony but is it necessary to warm up with a moving image ? How much does it warm up just by turning it on ? Seems like a 20 minute warm up is a lot of unnessasary phosper use. Is it ?

Yes, 20 minutes of "warm-up" is unnecessary. Most don't warm up their machines at all. Most people turn the system on, put the disc in, and start watching. Yes, it will warm up just by being on, with PIC MUTE on.
The only people who "warm up" their machines are generally guys with older sets that aren't as stable and need time warm up to "drift" back into convergence (since it was converged warm, it's out cold, and back in warm). Even my G70 would start with the red a bit out, but after 5-10 minutes, it was perfect, aka by the time the trailers were over.
Your G90 is probably perfect at power-on, so just turn it on and watch. No reason to warm up.

Jeff I usually recommend about 30 minutes of warm up on a G90. It is not harmful to watch them immediately on power up, but the color, brightness, and convergence will all be pretty far off initially. You can easily confirm this with test patterns; look at the dark contrast pattern in your Lumagen to see brightness level, the gray steps pattern to see that your grayscale is all blue, and the cross hatch to see the the convergence is pretty far out. You can also just look at real word images and see that they don't look sharp, they are dark, and lack pop.
The G90 white field is way too much phosphor and is overkill. It also runs off the face of the tube which I have never understood. Don't use the G90 warm up screen.
What I suggest is using the Lumagen test patterns for warm up. Go to the white field section of the test patterns. Press the down arrow to lower the output to something between 20-40 IRE. I usually use 40 IRE if I have less than 20 minutes to warm up. I usually use 30 IRE if I have 20-30 minutes for warm up, and I use 20 IRE if I think the projector may be on for a long time before I start watching. I also use 20 IRE if the projector is already warmed up and I want to keep it on.
When you are in the Lumagen test patterns you can press the number "2" key to take the text off the screen. Be sure to do this or eventually it will burn in.

FWIW. I just had a brand new green tube crack in a G90, 3 months after I sold the set. Not sure if the white warmup screen was in use, but considering VDC doesn't cover cracked tubes, this one's gonna hurt!

I'm confused: Are you guys saying even if the raster is setup correctly on the tube face and the images sent to the PJ display in the raster, that an internally generated "sony white screen" goes off the tube face? Shouldn't this be a big all-caps warning to G90 owners?

Yes and possible warning. The software in the G90 is probably similar to my 1272Q in that it will display an all white screen on power on. The entire tube face is used, including the edges of the tube not normally used for display content. I have been using the feature (set for 5 minutes) since the projector has been hanging in my theater (6+ years) with no issues. It provides a very well converged and sharp picture after use. The default setting is 20 minutes but can be adjusted by holding down the power on button (while in service mode) to adjust the length of the white screen. I can't imagine something Sony originally engineered into the set causing a catastrophic failure of the machine.

Yeah, I have never seen the G90 warm up screen crack a tube, but than again G90's are sometimes prone to cracking tubes. I don't like how the warm up pattern goes off the faces.
The warm up pattern actually doesn't fill the entire phosphor area, just most of it. What gets me is that when I see high hour G90's you can see the wear from the image and also a separate wear pattern from the warm up screen. It is amazing how much wear the warm up pattern puts on the phosphor compared to the virgin unused phosphor that remains. The pattern really ages the phosphor and I don't like that.
