Hi!

I bought this set a few years back, when the seller showed it to me it worked fine. Since then I've had it wrapped up safely, kept from harm, shocks, humidity or any other hazards. I hadn't touched it since and assumed it was fine.

I packed it well for a move, but the drive was long and the roads were rough. Since I hadn't powered it up in so long I don't know if the move killed it, but in any case, now that I've got it unpacked, I'm getting an F8 error and the projector won't stay on for more than a few seconds.

I unplugged power from the convergence board but I still get the same problem. According to some searches, almost anything else could be the problem, but I just don't have the money to keep ordering different boards and keep testing them out, paying for shipping and for parts I may not need.

I'm stumped. Is this PJ a goner if I don't have the luxury of lots of board swaps?

Wow thanks for the quick reply!

I unplugged power from the astig board and left the convergence board unpowered too. Now the projector starts up and stays on!

Does that mean it's the astig board that needs replacing?

Probably. Funny, I have a few in stock, and I started throwing them out because they NEVER failed... then right after that I had a set come in with a shorted one. Reconnect the C board and see if the set still works.

I think NEC never rewrote the software for the Plus, and simply tied the error creating line of the astig board to the C board line.

Wow, yeah, I plugged the c board back in and it still starts up and stays on! I'm relieved it was that easy to diagnose. Thanks Curt!
PM me a price for one of your remaining astig boards?

Weirdness! I just plugged the astig board back in, and now - with both the convergence and astig powered - the machine turns on and stays on.

Looking into the tubes from the outside, the text looks strange; it looks like..dyslexic. The letters are all crooked. But at least it stays on now...

Does this mean maybe my boards are ok for the time being?

Try re-seating the system boards. I've had to do that a few times after moving NEC's around.

It's usually a good idea to re-seat things anyway once you set up a projector again.

If not the same on all colours, then it could be a poor BNC connetion. On my set this looked like poor astig adjustment and disappeared with shortening all 5 BNC shields with an aluminum foil wrap. Try wiggle the plugs.

If you have a point board installed, pull it out. I've had that cause crooked lettering or lines on the screen.
