In the ~$2K range who should I be looking at for a video processor?
Lumagen gets a lot of reviews and seems well regarded.
Are there any other contenders?

Nothing else can do what a Lumagen can especially for CRT (though they are also excellent on digitals).

Agree with everything everyone here has said. I think the only area that one could really ding the Radiance is the user interface - it's not quite as intuitive as that on DVDO's processors, but it's certainly not hard to find your way around the Radiance. In every other area - customer service, feature set, quality of algorithms, upgradability, frequency of bug fixes and feature updates/upgrade - the Radiance line is unparalleled. Well, unless you're looking to invest $50K+ in industrial gear

Yeah, there is a learning curve with the interface. However, it is very well thought out and easy to use considering the immense number of features the Radiance line has. I mean, being able to adjust so many parameters requires an extensive interface that can be challenging at first. But once you start to use the processor it gets easier and easier.

I dont have any experience with any vp other than my radiance. I have to say it is amazing the amount of tweakability i have with the video coming out of my ps3.

A few comments on what needs doing and what a processor does and which is practical for doing it would be nice to hear.

No point being pessimistic; it probably would't work anyway.

The Radiance has so many features that it would be hard to describe them all in a nutshell and every individual has preferences to specific features they find more important than others in their particular set-up and equipment. I would recommend going to the product page of this website and/or the manuals front pages to get a better idea as to what its capabilities are. For me, since I already had the software and meter, the grayscale, gamma control and colour calibration with all the built in test patterns are terrific which enable me to calibrate my CRTs colour and grayscale accuracy well beyond the ability of the monitor on its own to achieve optimum performance. I particularly like the ability to adjust "mask/shrink", a feature, especially for BR movies that enables me to get the almost full capacity of the picture from the movie on the screen, not always possible with the monitors controls alone. Of course, we all know the Radiance's excellent scaling capabilities which have been regarded by the industry as pretty much "state of the art". These three areas alone are features, once set up, will show a distinct improvement to your picture and I have essentially just scratched the surface here.
There is a learning curve but once you get the hang of it, you will realize what an incredible piece of technology this is and if you want to bring your video experience to the next level, this is the way to go. I purchased my "Mini" in the spring and I wonder now and in to the future what I would have done without it.

Radiance is the best scaler, and calibration unit, but its not good with analog sources, deinterlacing, comb filtering, and no analog output, so it all depends what you need a VP to do for you..
