There are only 4 'active' threads on the CRT forum over on AVS. How sad. I remember when it used to be humming over there.....

Good thing we have this place. Thumbs Up

Good thing? AVS basically created this place (or the need for it, at least). They basically modded the forum over there to the point that nobody could have a discussion about much of anything meaningful. It wasn't just politics or personal attacks, either (which I could understand). And they didn't give warnings or even lock the thread... They'd just delete an entire thread. Just gone, nuked.

I'm on other forums - a car forum, even - where no bull**** is tolerated, but it's a much cooler place to me. They give warnings, they tell people to chill, maybe they delete a post or two once in awhile, but even though it's modded, it still feels very open and friendly.

Not so at AVS. Instead, they have posts from that Keysersoze douche like this in the under-$3000 forum:

Quote:
Zero Tolerance On Costco Postings!
There will be zero tolerance on any Costco postings in this forum.

If you won't listen to our warnings, your account will be suspended.
Repeat offenders will be banned.

Kyser

I'm tempted to just post a new post with the thread title and body one word each... "Costco"... Just to get suspended.

The flip side, is it was the sh*tty atmosphere over there that drove Curt and Kal to start their own forum, and here we are. Wink

Thumbs Up

While we are on the topic of AVS, has anyone else received a personel invite from big D himself to check out the new site before it goes public? I couldn't give a flyin goose poop what they do over there. He himself booted me because I questioned his judgement. Now he wants me to be a beta tester Rolling Eyes I don't effing think so.
I would not count on the CRT forum making the transition.

I got the invite. I thought I was one of the select few.Smile

I still go to AVS. They are still the big boy and most new products will be talked about first over there like the Darblet or Irule. Wink

That being said, there is a lot of stuff that turns me off. I can't even go to DIY screens anymore. You either agree with Mississippiman or get your post deleted. I thought about posting a thread over there about a possible new DIY screen paint that I may be working on to get some feedback. The problem is Sir MM would raise a fuss and delete it goes. There are some other sub-forums that are almost as bad.

I have met David, but haven't talked to him much. I do like the sales guys from AVS like Jason, Haflich, Garrett, etc. I don't think they have anything to do with the forum though.

I could start a new thread, but his highness would have it deleted. DIY screens is supposed to be DIY, but where is the line drawn? Is it making a screen frame with manufacturer material, painting a screen with Screen Goo or using materials that were never intended for screens? The latter is what they believe, but the irony is that they will sell you their mixes. Doesn't that make them manufacturers? Shocked I think Home Theater Shack does a much better job with screens and actually test them with an meter. I have already posted over there, but it would have been nice to get some general feedback from AVS users. Oh well.

Anyway, that is one of the big issues with AVS. They have become so large that it more commercial and less hobbiest.

Good God, is MississippiMan still lording it over the DIY forum? I haven't been there in 3-4 years and he was sucking up all the sycophantic fawning then. Guess he just can't live without it.

I'm a mod on another forum. The forum owner is an interesting cantankerous curmudgeon who has donated thousands of hours of his time to help people. He was one of the most active contributors on another big-dog AVS-like forum but the forum owner was a douche and finally drove him away. Now he's in his own forum with half a dozen mods, and he does NOT tolerate any crap. If anybody is an *******, they usually get one warning, maybe two, then if they can't play nice they're history. Spam posts are gone in seconds. It's a really chill and friendly place where everybody helps each other, just like here. Most of the major contributors from the other forum have moved over and they like it much better.

Amazing how you can build a great community of friends when you don't let power-mad pricks run the place.

Now that I have gotten everyone on a MM rant.Smile

It is part sycophant and part commercial, as he makes money selling his mixes and services. What you have described about the other forum is exactly what happened with AVS and HTS. A couple of guys who tried to advance DIY screen with testing and measurements butted heads with MM. They eventually gave up and went to HTS. At HTS, they are about finding the best screen for your set up regardless of whether it is a manufactured screen or DIY.

Anyway, it does show what people look for in a community.

Prior to this forum, the only time I ever visited forums was via google hits. I never could understand who these people were who spent all this time helping other people were. Now I "get" it -- given how much you all have taught/helped me I only wish I could be more helpful...

Perhaps this summer's projects will lead to a few minor unique/new contributions. Wink

What's really funny about the above comment is that this whole CRT thing for me almost didn't happen. I was one of those guys at avs that ended up posting about 45 minutes a day back in 2000 when I found their forum. I was buying and selling maybe 10 CRTs total at that point, was getting a few emails a day through eBay, and when I found AVS, I figured assisting others would get me some business. So I'd check it religiously every morning and evening after my sound system installation job. I got NOTHING for about 6 months. My post count climbed, and no sales, no repairs, nada. I was literally about a week from calling it quits, at least on AVS when I hit the 1000 post mark. All of a sudden the PMs and emails started coming in, and then the snowball effect happened within about a month of that.

I don't know why, but it seemed like I had some credibility when I hit that 1000 mark. I have nothing negative to say about AVS, ever. If not for them, this site wouldn't be here.

You'll also notice that with their site change, the CRT forum now has 314 pages of posts. I don't think they're canning it, their reformat makes every forum seem super busy, and that's fine with me too.
