|
|
So I am planning on moving my G70 into the other room downsatairs when I install the G90.
I want to use a PS3 as my BD. is this a good idea ? I dont have an amp that does HDMI so What to do about sound ?
I have an old kenwood HT amp.
So can i use the hdmi out of the PS3 and get RCA to the kenwood ?
I s there any issues JUST using the PS3 ?
Thanks.

I use a PS3 as a general media player as well as for blu ray movies with good results. Youll want to plug it into the projector using either component or HDMI. The audio really depends on the capabilities of your reciever. If your Kenwood only has stereo sound than rca will be your only option. If it supports dolby digital use a optical cord for digital sound. You can use a hdmi for video and a optical cable for sound.

Use the coax for sound, and component for video. ( if the PS3 has coax audio... ) However if the amp is only pro logic may as well just use analog left and right audio, itll be exactly the same to your ear.
There are far better options for a bluray player than a video game console though... Wont take much to beat a PS3 either if youve got such a capable projector.

Used the PS3 as my BD source on the G90 for about a year. Switched several years ago to the OPPO 83 and it outperformed the PS3 in every respect, including in order audio, video and convenience ie remote and bootup speed. Since I never used the PS3 for games I felt little desire to keep using it and its now relegated for occasional use on my 34XBR960 direct view HDTV. If it was me I'd recommend finding a used BDP-83.

If you already have the PS3 Jeff than it is fine to use as a BD player if you don't want to lay out more cash right now. It is very capable, just less convenient as Hayden points out.
Use the HDMI or analog output for video, and use digital toslink out to go to your receiver. You can use a Toslink-Coax converter like the one below:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&p_id=2947&seq=1&format=2
Or you can mod the player to output toslink directly.

A couple of years ago, my best friend's sister in law said the the PS3 had the least amount of issues with Blurays. As Craig said, if you don't want to spend the money on an Oppo then the PS3 should be fine.

I posted this before I did some checking on installing the G90 Unless I come up with a easy solution to a new install I have decided not
to use the g90 and just keep my g70.
I wonder what a fair price would be to ask for the g90, I will put it up on ebay in a couple weeks.
So the PS3 is moot now, I really only wanted to use it so I would have a cool little game room for the nieces and nephews and thought maybe I could use that and not have to spend a bunch of money on new components.
I dont play video games. I had a X box but sold it, It didn't have HDMI out.
If anybody saw the ebay ad and knows the condition of the PJ has an idea what a fair price to ask would be let me know.
Thanks.
