So, I watched Apocalypse Now Redux yesterday and was shocked that it was 3.25 hours long! I got it through Amazon, and I guess this was longer than the theatrical release.
I really like this movie and watching it for the dark scenes is a must see experience. Between the colors, story, sound and detail, I cannot imagine anyone liking war-ish films and not owning this BD. I think it captures the post-war sense that this period was run by corporation of the military machine and in a holy disposable sense.
Beyond that ambiance, I think Marlon Brando's performance was mesmerizing. And seeing Martin Sheen that young (and skinny) was something.

I'm torn with Redux. There are certain new scenes I like but then there are others that I find either drag on a bit (the whole plantation part) or parts that ruin the mystique a bit of some of the characters. For example, when they steal Kilgore's (Robert Duvall) surf board right after he gives that fantastic "I love the smell of napalm" in the morning little speech. I find that speech defines his character. Strong. a little crazy, and in control or almost invinsible (as shells explode around him). He seems in control or invinsible. Then two minutes later he gets knocked down about 10 pegs as he chasing the guys to get his surfboard back which makes him seem weak/no longer in control.

Watch the making of too that's included (Heart of Darkness). It's as interesting/crazy as the movie itself.

I haven't watched Heart of Darkness yet, but do they add anything to the duality of Kilgore's pysche?

I love the plantation sequence. It gives a nice backdrop to the history of Vietnamese occupation.

Vietnamese occupation? What kind of peace-nik, anti-war, anti-American comment is that? 
liked that part too, it was supposed to be like a dream sequence and all those people were supposed to be Ghosts.
