I watched this movie the other day and have to say the story in and of itself seems less entertaining than the actual footage at hand. If you are using a CRT then you will especially enjoy the scenes where the Japanese task force is traveling through a storm, and when the plane launch just before dawn. No way that my RS20 could do these scenes justice. The detail was nice while it was there, and the color too, but often seemed a little muted.

I watched the Extended Japanese version, but it has been a long time since I watched the theatrical version. I'll have to go back and see if I can tell the difference, but the version I just watched was long. The movie itself seemed more incline to play homage to documentary (with a lot of factual information), and the Japanese portion of the spoken script was hindered, IMO, by the subtitles being partially offset to outside the scope scene.

Because I do not have a player that allows me to move the subtitles, I had a choice of losing half the Japanese conversation or zooming out and creating a box scene which often detracted from the film itself. At one point I tried to shut off the subtitles, but that didn't work. I did use DTS-HD, and I enjoyed the sounds, but maybe the DD audio would have allowed for the subtitle elimination.

For the $11 I spent it was worth the buy. Now, if they would just put Midway out on BD ...
