I have read a few topics on nec pg10 and how some think there the cat's meow and you never see the for sale. so my question is why not mod a 9'inch set of tube to say like a 1350 with a good set of lens.

You don't see them very often because they didn't make very many of them.
It would be a huge job to fit 9" tubes into an XG'S chassis. While I never saw one, NEC did make a few 9" XG's before they got out of the analog business. I would certainly like to have a pair of them.

The 10PG is a great machine yes, it is a 9PG with larger tubes and LC lenses.

I have no idea why this always comes up as even being an issue... Do the tubes REALLY need to fit within the case? No. Do you look at the screen or the projector during use?  2 flat plates of steel and a few simple brackets will do the job for mounting the tubes anywhere you please provided the cables will reach to where they need to go, and the XG seems to have far more cable than it needs on most items

I wish I could remember his name, but there was a frequent poster from California who was a factory NEC dealer who had possession of one for a while. Wish I could remember his name.

Yah,
I tried for over a year getting in touch with doug, and one day Kurt said he thought Doug Passed away. 
I bought a 852 from a guy up in washington , that worked for nec, and doug set it up. 4500 hrs and and Just a tad bit of wear on the green.
I love the acat system on the 852 and 1352 works allosome for setting it up,for newbee's take 95 % of the frustration curve out. and the colors really pop.

I've made socket adapters in the past (gp3000 tubes in pg xtra), I've got a working XG chassis for which I could use as a test platform and I've got the original NEC Service manuals (schematics). I just need some burnt 9"s to test with and some free time.

Youre going to need new magnetics too, the neck size will be different.

I have a blue and a green 9" tube still need a red .And I have two complete 808 sets ,so I would have to figure how to switch the wires around. I had an extra 110xg chasie but just parted out, All I wanted was the tubes, they were about a 9 so I stuck em in my 852.
I will need to find a set of lens.
My biggest problem is all kinds of time just no money,to tinker.

A couple of years ago I was itching to do exactly this. Heck, I even bought a AC/DC tig welder to do the required aluminum work. No one was willing to donate a tube fried chassis to modify.
Alas, my days of modifying crt projectors is over. I just don't have the interest or the time for it anymore.
Further more, the quality has gone up and the price has come down on giant flatscreen tv's enough for me to switch when the projector is due for re-tube. I'm actually looking forward to it. Heck, half of the equipment in my rack is support equipment just to use a analog projector. I'll save a ton of money just on electricity.

I dont suppose anyone here would happen to know a model number of these mysterious 9" NEC XGs? If I could find one, I'd buy it over a G90 in a heartbeat

I have never heard of 9" XGs being made. I thought Doug said that NEC was planning on making a 9" pj for the replacement to the XG. Unfortunately, it was cancelled.

This is exactly what i always thought i had seen and heard too. If there was a 9er, youd reckon there would be some sort of knowledge of it here!!

If I happen to get my hands on a second XG, I think I will try this. I have the patience and know how of CRT PJs to attempt it. A 9" NEC XG would blow away a G90
What 9" tubes would one use with a XG? Since its a mod thing, I would assume that you would use the best you can get?
I think a good Model of this XG could be called: NEC XG 1551 (Keeping with NECs XG model line up  )

While this sounds like a fun project, I doubt it is going to be much better than the other 9" pjs. If every pj used the same tube, lens, mag combo, then you would probably find the performance differences between them pretty minor.
