Been getting some new vinyl in, and as a result, a new problem I've never had since I've never purchased new vinyl. Some of my new albums have so much static buildup that I can put the needle down on the LP and all I hear is the static.

I was told a Zerostat gun would work, but what does one do when there is not one of these around for the time being? Would a Microfiber cloth with distilled water eliminate the static charge?? I obviously don't want to ruin my new vinyl so thats why I'm asking.

Smile

(sorry, couldn't help myself! Smile)

Static buildup means you have a very dry environment. Put a humidifier in the room?

Don't have one of those either... One of the new albums when I first pulled it out of the sleeve didnt get any static buildup on it whatsoever, but another one had nothing but static..

Ill admit its dry, but I didnt think it was THAT dry Razz

Dampen a towel and then put the record sleeve on it( assuming its the rice paper type) and let it sit for a minute or two. Then pull the record out of it while it is still lying on the paper.

I use wood glue to clean really nasty records and pull the glue off the record while it is on a wet towel or else its massive electro static time!!!

I did the wood glue trick with a 45 and a 33 both of which were pretty filthy, man that worked like a charm. Pretty wicked! I also had the static issue with that.

I will try what you suggested and see how it works.

This vinyl stuff is addictive, I need MORE, much much much more Very Happy

I do a wet wash (tergitol solution LOC method) of EVERY record that comes in my house (new or old). That kills all the static right off.

Then I use an anti-static mat on my platter, and that is also surprisingly effective and keeping things static-free after play.

I have plans for trying the woodglue method too for the really grimey stuff that doesn't come off with a wet brush wash, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

I clean every record as well, since whether its new or not, its dusty, or very staticy, and I dont need to hear any of that. My pioneer turntable has the original dust cover for the mat, the little clear disc which tells you how awesome the material the rubber is made of is.

I'm scoping out some record cleaning machines, with the volume of vinyl I am buying, it is best that I get one. I'm just debating on if I want a manual, semi automatic, or full automatic unit. They can be had pretty reasonably for fully auto units used on ebay.

In the mean time, I guess I make do with my Microfibre cloths and distilled water to eliminate static :-\

I use a machine like this one for cleaning, and putting permostat on my records.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Okki-Nokki-cleaning-machine-new-/180771532113?pt=UK_Records&hash=item2a16d2ad51

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Milty-Permostat-Anti-Static-Refill-/230785925574?pt=Turntable_Parts_Accessories&hash=item35bbe9c1c6

I had a lot of problems with static records, like velcro on the mat, specially when my amp was getting hot.

Tried everything. but nothing was satisfying to me, so a friend of mine told me he put permostat on all his records 30 years ago, and he never have problems, and all his records are mint.

If someone like to try, please start with some records you don't care about, it takes some practice to get it right.

But getting it right statics are gone forever, and your records will look like they were never used.

Permostat is not for children, and should never be used like recommended on the bottle.
