Spurred on by the recent posts here on refurbishing old analog audio gear, I just finished cleaning up my old Otari RTR. Thanks to the help of several people here, I found a new capstan drive belt that works perfectly!
I had to rebuild my DBX 155 noise reduction unit as it didn't work after sitting for more than 30 years.
So yesterday I put on one of my 40 year old master tapes and was amazed that the tape was in good condition and worked fine.
These tapes are all live concert recordings done by a professional recording engineer in the early '70's using a 1/2 track professional tube type Ampex at 15 ips with DBX processing. I compared the results with a couple of the latest, highly rated full digital SACD's and came to the conclusion that the old analog tapes were more "real" sounding than the SACD's! Incredible - And thanks to a bunch of you guys perking my interest in old analog audio, I'll be enjoying these tapes again.
I'm also going to refurbish my old vinyl system to see how that compares.
