has anyone ever passed 1080i through component from bluray or hddvd. ive been reading that it is possible but for only bluray/hddvd content. my xg will only do 1080i so would it work.

Yes, i have, my Pioneer Bluray player would put out 1080i on both component and HDMI if i tell it to do so. I dont use the component anymore though, only used it cause i thought i had an HDMI cable spare and didnt.
Why will your XG only do 1080i?? They should all do 1080p, although 1080i will likely look better anyway.

i just connected my bluray to my lcd screen via component and it looks pretty darn good. now gonna see how it looks on my pj!

I ran 1080i to my 1271 for a couple of years from HD DVD and BD. No problem!
Case, I think the XG isn't too happy with standard XG porches, and you get raster wrap or something... I'm not an NEC guy, but I think I remember reading about that. IIRC, you can use an outboard processor (or switch to an HTPC) with adjusted porches to avoid the problem. It's been awhile, but that's what I remember.
Even on my G70, I get a little raster ringing on the left side at 1080p.
