I note that the Spyder products aren't recommended here and the X-Rite i1 Display Pro (which I could get for about £150 http://www.warehouseexpress.com/search/?q=x%20rite ) doesn't work with ColorHCFR I don't think, so is there anything else for £150 or less that does, that I can use to calibrate CRT, LCD and Plasma screens?
Even £150 is a lot for me, so I can't even consider buying something for that price that won't work with free software.

It looks interesting and I've got no objection to using Linux, but I can't tell whether it can be used with ColorHCFR (or something similar) on a laptop to calibrate a TV that's not connected to the laptop, or if it's only for calibrating monitors connected to the PC.
I thought the issue with the Spyder is that they weren't very well calibrated. Is there any reason to believe these will be better calibrated than the Spyder?
It only says it's compatible with LCD and LED as well, not Plasma or CRT.

You would have to send them an email to see what it works with.
The lowest priced meter that is considered acceptable IMO is the i1 D3. The rest can be hit and miss. Will this one be good enough? Until someone does a comparison who knows.

Is the i1 D3 the same as the i1 Display Pro I linked to?
I'd probably stretch to that if it worked with free software, but I couldn't afford extra for software as well.

Yes, they're the same meter. I very highly doubt that they will work with HFCR because that program hasn't been updated in some time, and the i1D3 is brand new.

I also believe I remember reading from Tom at ChromaPure that the way X-Rite does the licencing of the i1D3 is different so even even if the ColorHCFR guys wanted to incorporate it they would not be able to since ColorHCFR is free.
I'd also recommend the i1D3+ChromaPure package. Excellent meter, excellent (very intuitive) software. I understand that this is not the point of the original question but that's my opinion having written the Greyscale Guide for Dummies.
Everyone I talk to who used to use HCFR and now uses ChromaPure tell me how easy and more intuitive it is to use. ChromaPure has won “Best calibration software” at HomeTheaterHiFi.com two years in a row now (2010 and 2011).

Back to the original question: If cost is the overriding concern then go for a resonably new DisplayLT with the free ColorHCFR software. It will most certainly be better than no calibration at all.

I'd certainly hope that ChromaPure is better than HCFR, when it costs $180 vs $0 
Thanks for the suggestion for the DisplayLT though. I'll try and find one of those, although unfortunately I can't find anywhere selling them in the UK so far.

Would a second-hand Eye One Display 2 be any good and work with ColorHCFR? I've seen a few on e-bay but I'm a bit concerned that they might need recalibrating before I use them and I don't know how much this might cost.
