I had no prior knowledge of this comic strip/story. I went into the movie completely blind. I understood the movie started in the early 1960's and wondered how a kid could run fast enough across a military airport to keep up pace with his fathers test jet plane attempting to take off. I am not sure if I would have ejected* at the slow speed of the aircraft (and it got lift?), or be dumbfounded at my son's ability to run at jet aircraft launch speeds.
* Most test aircraft did not have ejection seats during the 1950's and 60's. I'm not even sure they had them in the 70's and 80's. It was what made being a test pilot so dangerous.
So, while lacking fear of being endanger of a burning plane this near supersonic fearless child probably had a better career in the Olympics. But this is all answered in the child's continual bad decisions as seen in the movie when he is an adult.
First, we crashes another plane to prove he can beat some pilot-less attack drones, and in doing so use his ex-girlfriend/boss's daughter as fatal bait while succumbing to the childhood memory of his father's failure. And if that were not enough, his ex is HOT. Sure, I knew who Blake Lively is, and yet she is a modern women that can dress is the sexiest business outfit to conduct the family's business and be smart enough to dumb Hal and fly military aircraft in a combat role.
I could see Hal dropping out of Lantern school for this hottie, but then that poor decision was followed up by not hitting it again. Dear god is this man have closet issues?
And finally, the universe's most dangerous criminal escapes by such an easy event, claims the life of the most skillful lantern, but then is out-done by the most incompetent pre-Lantern via a harness connected to two pilot-less drones flying in space?
Sound is good, but not great. Video was good, but not great. Story was sub-mildly entertaining. Like X-Men First Class I wonder if this was meant to be a TV movie of the SyFy variety. Personally speaking, I would have continued banging the boss' daughter and left the universe's grief wane.
Well, until he ring kidnapped me. Not a buy (regret), but maybe a rent.
