Is there any benefit in connecting this wire? The tubes focus without it but I can't help but think Sony could have easily left it out but did not same for Barco.

Most likely you have some residual voltage on that line, which is allowing the tube to focus. touch the red wire to the chassis, then power back up, I'll bet you'll find it to be way out of focus.
