Hi,

I have searched and searched and searched this forum and the internet and I can't find any instructions on how to swap tubes between a 1252Q and 1270Q sony projector. I see the g70 guide but I'm guessing that isn't the same as the two I have.

My issue is this, I have a 1252Q, just got a hold of a IFB12A and a switcher( my second Switcher) for $12.00 from an auction. I tried the IFB12a in the 1270 becaue it has the best tubes, but I couldn't get it to go no matter what I tried. So I put it in the 1252Q, which tubes are probably 4-5 on rating chart, and it works great. So I would love to make the 1252Q my main pj but the tubes are quite on the way downard if not there already... One of these will be my main pj so I want to take my time and do this right, cause I don't have the budget right now to replace either projector if something goes wrong.

Here are some pics of the blue and green in the 1252Q and the blue, green, red in the 1270Q, I also just added a couple from my theater I have been working on for a few months now. when it's completely done I'll call it the best home theater under$1000.00( since I will have spent no more than that on everything). Thanks

Its in a gallery. My seats need to be straightened out. And some touches here and there..

Shouldn't be too hard. See if the housings on the 1270 look the same as the 1252. If so have at it.

Go slow, take lots of pictures so you know where the cables go putting it back together and ask lots of questions here.

With that wear, change the red as well, the red will be soft in focus.

The IFB 12 will not work in the 1270, for some reason that board came out after the 1270 was made, and Sony made some small changes in the later set to get them to work.

Ok, so can I change them all at once or do I have to go one by one turning it on and aligning and stuff? Also do I have to change the housing too or just the tube part?

YOu may as well do one at a time to make sure you're doing it right. The power supply has to be pulled out the front of the set. that will expose the bolts that hold the lens frame and the tube in place. Take those off, and the tubes slide out the front.

It will be a PITA to get the yokes and stuff off the tube neck, as Sony put tape under the yokes, and after 15 years, the yokes will be securely stuck to the tape. I mean REALLY stuck to the tape. Loosen the clamp that holds the yoke to the tube, and twist.. HARD to get the yoke loose. you won't break the tube neck.

You might want to disconnect the wires, leaving the yokes in place. I think the yokes between the 1270 and 1252 are the same, so you could simply transfer tubes. I think though that you're the guy that's buying 2 tubes off me, in which case you're getting a raw tube and HV lead, so you'll need to take one set of yokes off. WOrst case, take the tube and yoke out, take off the radiator clamp thing around the yoke neck, and put a small screwdriver under the plastic tabs that are stuck to the tape. The screwdriver will pop the tabs loose, then the yoke will come off.

Oh, and removing the HV lead from the HV splitter is a bit of a trick as well.

Pull back the gray rubber boot over the Hv lead at the splitter.

Push down HARD on the HV lead, and twist the lead about 90 degrees CCW while pushing it down. That will release the tiny metal tabs on the tip of the lead, and the lead will slide out of the splitter socket. If the lead doesn't come loose, start over.

Once the tabs are released, the leads will slide right out. DO NOT force the lead out. I've done that twice in frustration, and the 1/2 hour of messing around, trying to get the metal tip out of the HV splitter was a royal pain.

Once you do one tube, the other ones will be much easier as you repeat the process.

Thanks for the help Curt, I will attempt this probably next week, I'll prepare until then... I may also run the 1252 tubes till they really aren't any good or I can't get any type of decent focus out of them.....Although I am not the guy who is buying 2 tubes from you. The weird thing is that if you look at the crt display hours it says its only at 2717 hours, but that's hard to believe with the type of wear those tubes unless the guy ran everything in the 80%+ range the whole time... I'll keep this updated.

the counter resets to 0000 when it hits 9999, so try 12717 or 22717 hours. Smile

Well I am happy to report that I have successfully swap all 3 tubes from the 1270 to the 1252Q. I didn't have to take the yokes off as they are the same. So I assume that made my job a little easier. Very glad it all worked out well, thankfs for the help.
