I have mentioned like a broken record that the two things that CRT still does better than digital are motion resolution and on/off cr. I think a lot of people especially the digital guys don't really understand motion resolution. It isn't that difficult. It is basically the resolution when the picture is moving. The only way to test that up to now has been the FPD test disc out of Japan. Someone over at AVS just posted these two free download tests. Not sure how they compare to the FPD disc (maybe Scott can give a comparison), but they are worth a try. I just tried them on my Dell LCD monitor, which is 1440x900. With motion, I am around 400 to 500 vertical resolution. I seemed to recall that most digital pjs were getting around half of their 1080p resolution. The guy who did the test is (was) a CRT owner and his tests are no longer available on AVS. The conspiracy theorist in me says AVS removed it because they only sell digitals.

The images look very much like, if not identical to the ones on the Japanese disk. The second one might be more usable. They didn't run with VLC on my 1024x768 CRT monitor. I suspect they might have to run on a 1920x1080p system.

Yep, CRTs still have the best motion resolution. The digitals can have good motion resolution but the ones that I have seen have to insert "black" frames which causes a flicker effect.

thanx. judging from the tests my 26" LG sips display does about 550-600 in motion resolution at 1920x1200. and this is supposed to be one of the best consumer displays you can buy.. run it with mpc hc.

will try to test it tomorrow on my old 21" crt.

Come-on NHK is doing PLASMA on those, and PLASMA motion resolution can be full resolution.

compaq V1000.

damn. I got about 900 on vertical and full 1080 on horizontal movement. and the test runs so smooth, compared to LCD. now I really regret I didnt buy those 24" sonys I saw for sale a year ago. this compaq is no top of the line crt, and not even the best I have owned..

How do you judge resolution. I am not real sure how to judge the results. My plasma looks fine with the movement but the boxes in test1 looks like they are flashing on/off with movement.

Current Panasonic plasmas can all do 1080 lines in motion. Older sets like the PZ80 still did 800-900, way above LCD, LCOS/DILA. I think 120hz LCD do ~660, maybe the 240hz sets can do full res (but with the ruined cadence of interpolated frames).
