Sorry to be stuck on this border thing but I want the best viewing conditions in my office without painting the whole thing black. Kal, you said a shadow box improves the contrast. The wall I am projecting on would make a shadow box impractical unless I did this . . .

Make 2 - 6' long floor-to-ceiling "shower curtains" out of black fabric. Paint the area around the screen black floor to ceiling and out about 8 inches on each side. Mount hanging j-hooks in front of the screen and out to the sides at 45 degree angles. When I'm not watching a movie the "shower curtains" will hang in front of the screen flush (almost) to the wall. When I get on my bike to ride or just want to watch a movie I take the curtains off and hang them at 45 degree angles away from the screen. Like this as seen from above.

I know this probably seems crazy to you guys with cool home-theatre setups, but I'm not much of a carpenter and the full blown home theatre isn't really an option for me right now. Besides, this is just for me and really just for when I'm riding an excercise bike or watching the Chiefs loose the first playoff game 42-0. Still love 'em though.

Anyway, this would give me a theatre-on-demand thing wouldn't it?
What do you think guys?

OK, The way I see it either it is . . .

1. A brilliant idea and everyone is really jealous that they didn't think of it first

or

2. A stupid idea and everyone is too polite to tell me it is a stupid idea.

My feeeling is that it is probably closer to 2 than 1. I'm going to try it (or something like it) anyway and let you guys know if it was 1 or 2 Smile

i think that the curtains would work, but it really is a subject thing. this is your "batcave" and you should set it up the way that you want. i just painted my HT ceiling with four coats of deep deep flat red almost maroon and while i'm getting mixed feedback, i like it.

Not a stupid idea at all. I have 3 curtains in my final plans too. 1 to cover all the windows, 1 to cut of the living room from the dining room and one to close of the door way into the living room. All 3 will retract when not in use.

Good use of line graphics by the way.
