I decided just to stick with a 72"x54" 4:3 screen and let PowerDVD black bar. I can always use blocking and that leaves my options open. I was considering painting some molding black to use for a border but that would stick out away from the wall.

Should I just paint in a black border or is there a better option?

same size screen as me..

for the border, there is 2" wide stick on velvet that i have heard makes a great border. i think that it was mentioned on this forum... yep, clarence supplied this link to veltex velvet ribbon back in march.

Thanks again for the help on the screen Zaphod. Thanks to You, GE and Kal I've got a VERY nice screen for less than $30. That Floetrol stuff is great. I don't think I'll paint without it anymore. I don't have a single run and the coverage is very smooth. Of course, I did put on 7 coats, but still very even and very smooth.

I think I may just paint the border on. The more I think about it the more I'm afraid that anything I stiick on the sheetrock will tear the paper when I pull it off. I hate finishing sheetrock. I can do it, but I hate it.

2" border sound about right? Flat black right?

I use Velveteen wrapped around pine 1x3" 's to make a border that completely sucks up light.

Kal,

I was looking at the pics of your impressive home-theatre set-up. I like the way your screen is surrounded by black. I'm thinking about just doing the entire wall (except for the screen portion) in flat black. What do you think?

Tim

If you can get away with it, go for it! I love the increased contrast you get when you essentially shadow-box your entire screen.

This is in MY office in the basment of MY house and it is the only room my loving wife has no influence over. From the very beginning we have had that understanding . . . MINE! She can (and does) decorate the rest of the house however she wants.

In one room she picked out a lovely shade of white that I was swear was the exact same color as the primer. There is very little in this world less gratifying than painting a white room the same shade of white.

I honestly thought about painting the whole room black but that seemed extreme just to get a good contrast ratio. I really like your color scheme and think I will go with that. I'll shadowbox the wall and ceiling that the screen is on and do the rest in brown tones.

Make sure Clarence sees this - he was lamenting the mere 2.75" width of the Veltex ribbon that he found.

GREAT FIND!!

Very Happy

great find indeed. but if you go for the 12" width, make sure that you buy a case instead of a single roll.

the single roll price is $125.55 and if you buy a case, the price per roll is 108.00 the twist is that for the 12" stuff size, a case is one roll. so you can buy one roll for 125, or a case of one roll for 108.

sometimes, volume discounts make sense. sometimes they don't.

I bought a roll of the duvetyne too... But, I'm still waiting for my buddy to help me fabricate the trim pieces that the tape will cover. The photos on the findtape site make it look very... um... rough, and light-absorbing, like the "loop" side of velcro tape. That's what I was hoping for. The roll I got however, looks more like felt in that it's a little smoother than I was hoping for. Perhaps it can be roughed up a little with a lint roller or maybe it's just matted down from being on the roll and will stand up a little after it's off the roll. I can take some close-up pics if anybody's interested.

Hey... I have been learning to sew this week... Laughing

I just finished up reupholstering the rear deck area and back seat of my boat.. It turned out awesome.. The Bucket seats were very tricky as they have lots of curves and such and vinyl is very hard to work with but they should be done tonight....

I picked up some black velvet to build a frame/shadow box for my HT screen... and speakers...

I can't wait.. It will probably be much easier to work with than the boat vinyl was...

I have some neat Ideas for my HT.. I'll make sure and get pix up when it is worth looking at...

It'll look something like Kal's only with the speakers built into the wall

Oh wait... gota go... Sewing with Nancy just came on...

Laughing

Fabricating trim to wrap or cover in velvet tape should not be that hard SC... A simple hand saw and some L brackets should do the trick?

Oh, God no - I can't do anything the easy way, Ron. It's a sordid affair.

We're starting with 2x3's so the border will have some dimension... thickness. Then, we'll rip them down a little and run them through a dado to put a slot in the board that will fit over the edge of my screen... just a little - just enough to cover the rough edge, but not so much as to cover any significant screen area. Then, we'll run it through his planer to put a little angle on the face. Miter the corners... Then I'll wrap them in the tape, tap them onto the screen and shoot some trim nails through side to hold it on.

Half a Saturday later, I should have a pretty sweet screen border. Wink
