Guys... I know there are only about two people on this forum from my neck of the woods, but I thought I'd post here anyway - just in case.

There's a little group of us Iowa AVS guys that are doing a small HT meet/crawl... Four people are hosting - three digital theaters and one CRT (guess whose THAT is? Wink)...

The date is all set for Sunday, April 10, and the schedule is roughly 10:30am to 3:30pm.

I think the group is up to about to 15 or 16, and I have a feeling we'll pick up a couple more than that... So, if anybody from here would happen to be close-by, passing through, or up for a road-trip, let me know! The more, the merrier! There are at least a couple of CRT'ers in attendance, so we won't be totally outnumbered. Wink

Cheers,
SC

Oh, yeah - the opening to Cars is awesome for on/off and color...

I also have the TRON Legacy BD pre-ordered - gets here a week from tomorrow... That movie was chock full of awesome blacks.

Any other suggestions to show off the on/off?

I borrowed my old man's BD burner, so I'm going to crash-course this week on BD ripping and try to figure out the best way to play it back... The PS3 won't play MKV... I don't have an HTPC that will play 1080p faithfully... The plan is to assemble half a dozen or so 2-3 minute clips for the demo. Is there any other container format that the PS3 will play (with high-res audio), or do I need to re-author a Blu-ray (which would be fine)?

Get Twonky or some other server on your PC to serve the MKVs to the PS3.

I've got a server, Greg... I set up that little Verbatim MediaShare Mini box... The sharing interface wasn't the most intuitive for sharing to DLNA clients, but once I figured that out, I've been pretty happy with it.

I assume you're talking about something for real-time format conversion, though... So, does Twonky or some other media server convert the MKV on-the-fly to something the PS3 can play, like VOB? Will I keep the high-res audio?

What's the "container" on a BD? I guess I've never looked at a video BD file structure...

OK, so I need help coming up with 12 minutes of demo material. We've got:
- Cars opening scene/title sequence - ~3 minutes
- Some Tron sequence - ~3 minutes

What else?

The underground chase scene in The Dark Knight is pretty awesome too or any of the I-MAX shots are great.

Yeah, that's a great scene, Mike... But, everybody seems pretty universally burnt out on Dark Knight since it's been used for demo material so often... But, I suppose I could use just that sequence. I'll have to go rifle through the BD's I have and see what else I have to throw in the demo hopper.

Hmmm... Haven't even seen that. I'll check it out. Thanks!

Here's what Sony says about video format playback using the 3.10 - 3.15 software...

http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/3_15/video/filetypes.html

Quote:
The following types of files can be played under (Video).
Memory Stick Video Format
- MPEG-4 SP (AAC LC)
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
- MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
MP4 file format
- H.264/MPEG-4 AVC High Profile (AAC LC)
MPEG-1 (MPEG Audio Layer 2)
MPEG-2 PS (MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AAC LC, AC3(Dolby Digital), LPCM)
MPEG-2 TS(MPEG2 Audio Layer 2, AC3(Dolby Digital), AAC LC)
MPEG-2 TS(H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, AAC LC)
AVI
- Motion JPEG (Linear PCM)
- Motion JPEG (μ-Law)
AVCHD (.m2ts / .mts)
DivX
WMV
- VC-1(WMA Standard V2)

So... Looks like an MPEG-2 program or transport stream might be the ticket... They don't specify DTS in any of the file formats, but I don't see why it wouldn't work...

OTOH, I have the old "fat" PS3, and it won't even bitstream the audio from the BD, so who knows...

I'll do some tests this weekend. Might have to burn a disc... Which isn't a big deal... Heck, I could even sequence the clips that way to run all by itself.

Can you rip only a specified section of a track with MakeMKV, or do you have to rip an entire movie at a time?

You can rip a track with either MakeMKV or my GUI...Or eac3to from the command line. If the movie has seamless branching about 15% do, then if you find the file that has the clip you want you can rip only that file with eac3to.

It looks like AAC is supported...It is lossy...But eac3to or Another eac3to GUI will convert the lossless audio tracks to AAC and mux them back into a MKV, or you might use TS-Muxer.

I convert all my audio to FLAC...I doesn't look like that is supported on a PS3.

Mike... Sorry for the dumb questions... I'm sure it's annoying for those of you that have been ripping BD for a long time...

But, is AnyDVD HD the only tool that will rip the BD m2ts to an m2ts without converting to MKV? I'm not worried about subtitles or saving disk space... I just want to rip a few of the movies that I want to use for demo material A) so I don't have to switch disks, B) no FBI warnings or trailers.

Will your GUI do that?

Didn't you get a WDTV? Or was that just for work?

Is it possible to just use a laptop with the ripped files on it?

Just trying to think outside your box for a second.

Yeah, that was for work... And against our recommendation, the client ended up insisting on running everything from a Vista laptop, which we then spent several hours fighting with to get working with the VGA distribution amp the AV company stuck us with... Ended up being the distribution amp that was the problem, but because it wasn't feeding back the "I'm a display" signal, the laptop video wouldn't stay up. But, anyway...

OK, read up on the WD TV Live HD Plus or whatever the hell the new one is, and it looks cool, but it looks like it won't pass-through (or decode) advanced audio. Sad

That's also the problem with just running from my laptop - no advanced audio... That I'm aware of, anyway. My MacBook has a Mini DisplayPort, which is supposed to interface with HDMI, and with audio, but the chances of VLC or some other player actually working... Let's just say I there aren't enough hours between now next weekend to get that working if it were my full time job. Wink

Then, there's really no way to edit any of the source material into clips and keep advanced audio...

And there's the file-size limitation with the FAT-32 volumes attached to the MediaShare...

So, I think my only two workable solutions for getting advanced audio are playing discs on the PS3, or simply streaming ripped files from the computer to the PS3...

I'll see how that works next, I guess. I wonder if it keeps chapters in the m2ts files, or if that's in the metadata on the BD... Would kinda suck if I had to FF to the part I wanted to show.

The new lossless audio codecs will be the kicker here....but I am not sure if that is really a deal breaker.

Can't Tversity send an MKV+flac file to the PS3?

Quote:

Yes, WMA lossless and FLAC are both transcoded by the media server to WAV, and since WAV is supported by all the devices we know of, you can play your lossless files without loosing quality.

and MKV is listed as a supported video format...so what happens when you send a MKV+flac file? It obviously won't bitstream but would your Integra show it as 7.1LPCM?

OK, that might work... I'll have to try that... Mike's GUI the best option for that?

I happen to think so...but I was raised on it. Wink

I would try it for you but I don't have a spare network cable for the xbox....and I don't have a PS3 anymore.

I usually just convert to AC3 anyway for rips. If the BR is good enough I just use the disc.

You know... I might just blow off the high-res audio in favor of having instant access to all the demo clips I want. MKV with core audio is better than farting around swapping four different discs, skipping trailers and (not skipping) FBI warning screens and such...

I'll try Mike's GUI, though and try streaming the MKV's and see how that works.

Thanks, Greg!
