THE BACKSTORY

I'm one of those luddites running a non-HDMI receiver. Since my only HD audio source is BD and my Lumagen has video switching duties, I can't justify the rather expensive upgrade to my my higher end Yammy receiver just to get processing to create a 7.1 mix from a 5.1 source and additional processing (like a THX mode or whatever).

My BD player does a fine job at decoding (from what I can tell, its higher end kit and HD audio sounds better from it than my receiver decoding DD and DTS) so I'm fine running the analog inputs of the receiver.

Problem is, only a handful of BDs have a 7.1 mix, so hooking up the 7.1 outputs of my BD player to the 7.1 inputs of my receiver mean my rears are generating no sound almost all of the time.

THE QUESTION

I'm thinking about putting a mechanical A/B switch into the set up so that if the BD is 5.1, I can send the surround signal to the rears and on the RARE chance it is 7.1 I can send the rear signal to the rears.

However, with this set up, the rears get the same signal as the surrounds, not an "invented signal" which is level adjust and a result of marixing the surround signals. So I'm not sure if it will sound better or worse than nothing in the rears for a 5.1 mix. So, I'm looking to find a person or two who have done this experiment who could share their results and opinions before I go to the expense and hassle of doing it only to find out I don't want to do it!

TIA
