TV/Projector: Vidikron Vision 1 - Ultra

Posted: Mon Mar 21, 2011 3:45 pm    Post subject: Focus Issue with Vision 1

Hi,

Need some help on focus issue with my spare Vision 1. I tried to fire up my spare unit and all the 3 tubes was unable to focus nicely. I tried to adjust the lens for focusing, clean HDM, FCM, CLM + removing & re-installing all chips, ribbon cables on motherboard & clean all contacts with contact cleaner but still no luck.

Yesterday, I removed CLM board and spray contact cleaner on backplane, VIM board & mother board and start to fire up again and the focus was good and sharp.

However, my happiness didn't stay for long as when I tried to 'ON' the projector again today, the focus was bad. I tried to re-clean all the boards and still failed to get good focus on all the 3 tubes.

I had swapped my spare FCM & HDM boards but the focus was still bad. Right now I have given up hope and decide to post this in this forum hoping that someone could help me to narrow down the problem and resolve focussing issue.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Hello

Please advise serial number and firmware level, so we can determine when it was built.

Hello

Okay, it is earlier maybe 1995. Unplug the power cord and wait three minutes. Pull out the control board, it is on the back panel, it is the board with the three 9 pin connectors and the ready light. You may need to loosen the side panel for the control board to slide fully out. Remove the small board (stigwave) mounted on top of the control board and look for resistor R35, it is surface mount and very small, near the rear edge of the board. If not marked "332" then replace it with a 3300 ohm resistor. Use all common antistatic precautions when handling or soldering a board. This is an approved update for the "snap" problem.

Hi Tim,
You're right. The R35 resistor marked as "471" and not "332". Today, I removed all 3 tubes & did some cleaning and re-install again but encounter different issue. Firstly, the tube failed to fire up & secondly, there was a V-fail indication on the CLM. Usually, re-seating the HDM will fire up the tube but it won't. I tried using another HDM board but still failed to fire up.
Please advise why the tube won't fire up & why there's a V-fail error on CLM? It was working perfectly before except for focus issue only.

Hello

Check your vertical yoke wires, are they plugged into the vertical board correctly?

Yes it was connected correctly. At time, there wasn't any vertical board error but still it won't fire up. After switching 'ON' and 'OFF' again, the V-Fail error would light up again (intermittent)

Just an update. I swapped the whole heatsink + convergence + vertical board and the tube is able to fire up. However, the tube is still unable to focus. I tried swapping with another CLM board having version 5.4 but focus still bad. Any other possibility why it can't focus? LVPS, HVPS, VIM etc...

I've tried with another 2 HVPS but still same result but I've not tried with another LVPS yet. Most likely I will try to swap LVPS from my perfect Vision 1 that is mounted on the ceiling.

Hello

Slow down and revisit the basics. Under PIC 4 does the focus vary? How about zone focus in the service menu? How about zone stig? Try to determine what works and what does not work. Are your focus yokes plugged in correctly? Blue goes in front.

Focusing is controlled by the CLM and the focus board. If the HV were off, all three tubes would be out of focus. I would swap focus yoke wires between the outputs on the focus board. That will eliminate the tube and focus yoke itself as a possible problem area.

Guys,

DVH99 is right. All tubes focus are bad. I've attached the picture of how badly the tube looks like for the red & green tube grid but it's the same for blue as well.

I did swapped good flare yoke, scan yoke & focus yoke on the red tube but still the focus is bad. Could bad mother board or backpane cause this focus issue?

Regards
Faizel

Hello

Try this: Set PIC 4 focus to 100, bring up dots only test pattern, and run contrast up to 80-90, are the dots round?
