I just ordered a 87 inch wide screen because my 69 inch screen broke. Would this projector handle that size increase? Or would the image be too dark/fuzzy? I'm going to try it anyway, just wanted to hear some opinions on a 7 foot wide screen with a 7 inch tube projector. Of course, I don't have to use the whole thing, but it would look dumb projecting a smaller image on a large screen.

What gain is the screen?

What make/model?

Doesn't say anything about gain. For CRT I'd go with around 1.3. You should be able to light up a 7 foot wide screen on with the 7" ECP without any problems as long as you keep the room pitch black.

Yeah I keep the room black.. for movies anyway.. With TV.. ehh i don't really care. I noticed they don't give you gain information on that site. Only if they're glass beaded or if their matte white. If its not to my liking, i'll look into a 1.3 gain screen. Its just about the width of the room i have it in too Very Happy. Can't go any larger. Its going to be slightly ridiculous... or completely ridiculous but thats how I roll. Laughing

I'd say the price is certainly right! At $57, I spent more than that just wrapping my screen in velvet! Smile

I think the Draper matt white material is a 1.0-gain material. You'll be giving up some brightness over a 1.3-gain material, but it shouldn't look bad on a 87-inch wide screen as long as the room is dark. Just consider that a true 1.3-gain material would give you nearly 30% more brightness. That's certainly an inexpensive screen... My DIY screen was close to triple that price. Definitely try the screen out and see what you think before you think about doing anything else.

Cheers,
SC

And what I have now looks just a matte white material. Shouldn't look that much darker. Thanks for your input guys. But you found it is a 1.1 gain. I didn't see that before. I just sort of bought this screen because I needed a replacement fast :p bet you guys would understand Very Happy

I just ordered some Hurley Superglo screen material that is 1.3 gain. 34"x86" 2.35 ratio. With shipping, $163. I have some boards for a border, and I grabbed velvet felt for $14. That is a really cheap screen, but you can get a 1.3 gain screen for not much more if you don't like it.

That new 2.32 ratio seems to be the next big thing. I don't think I can do that with my Mac or my direcTV receiver. I guess you would have to shrink the PJ rastors down even more?

Yes, you should have to adjust your vertical size. I am running a Lumagen radiance to handle the video processing of both my BR player and cable box. Your DirecTV box is most likely putting out 16:9 1080i. Your Mac I would think could do the processsing to cinemascope with the right program and videocard.

Yeah my setup is 16:9. I'm happy with that format, i can't buy any new equipment anytime soon. I'm only doing 720p with the HDFury. i need the 1020 box to fix the raster shift if i want to do 1080i. Would like to get a used one, i'm in school right now, on a tight budget.

TV/Projector: ECP 4500 (Vidikron box), ECP4500+, wanting 07MS/07MTS, evaluating pc soft-blend

Posted: Tue Mar 08, 2011 11:59 pm    Post subject:

I use an 80" wide, gain = 1 screen with my ECP 4500 in 4:3/16:9/2.35:1 formats and think it is tolerable for TV even with (2) 25W wall sconces on the cream-colored wall behind me for most viewing. I have both brightness and contrast set way up to 4.5 for that. It is a Sharpvision XS-100SPMR. For movies, looks way better with lights off. Of course, I'm beginning to think I may have the easiest to please eyes on the forum though.

OK, thats what i thought. I'm not going to bother then. Doesn't sound like worth the money, if I found a cheap set maybe.

See below on the hd6 vs 145. I'm expecting a set of nice tubes that I'm going put clear glycol in before I switch to the tinted 145s I got from Curt. I expect it will be this summer before I can make time, but I'll post some comparison pics once I've got it done. One other user reported the 145s looked a bit better over HD6s, but the general agreement seemed to be playing with a 7ES machine like this is sorta silly.

i understand that its really limited but I simply don't have room for a larger machine right now. I was just curious.
