Guys!
I frequently have need for photocopies but do not want to invest in one; would a 600 dpi flat bed scanner print to my HP laser as good as a copier makes copies? I am talking monochrome, I have little need for color copies although most scanners appear to be color.

Nice, but scanners seem to be replacing faxes and that Canon model does not appear to scan.

If it's just quick copies you need I'd suggest some sort of 3-in-1 laser printer/fax/scanner machine. It's much more convenient than adding a scanner to an existing setup since you don't have to use the PC (or even have it on) to make copies. Instead of having to click through software to scan from the scanner and save the results and then print the results on the separate printer, you just press a button like on a photocopier.

OK, given may day job is doing scanning software including some that runs on various makers MFPs (Canon, HP, Ricoh, Lexmark, etc) I can speak to this!
If all you care about is quality Tim, that it is pretty much a toss up. Basically current MFPs do just that, they scan the paper to an image, then print it. You can essentially do the same thing with the same results.
However, I would agree with most of the posts, you can get a decent "home office" class scan/copy/print multi-function laser for pretty reasonable, hell some decent ones used are under $400!

I'm really happy with my little Brother laser I bought a few years ago... Postscript emulation, duplexing, ethernet, and good Mac driver support. I bought it for a little print project for the mother-in-law, half expecting to kill it in the process, but I ran something like 1000 duplexed sheets through it in a day or two and it never even missed a beat - no jam, nothing.
Here's a Brother multifunction machine for $225. You don't need the computer on if you just want to copy or fax...

We have a Brother MFC-8460N multi-function we bought probably 5 years ago... never had any issues. Works great for photocopies, general laser printing, etc. Quality? I dunno, looks like regular laser quality to me. I'm not the person to ask if you actually spend time comparing scanner/black and white laser printers.

Thanks Dave; I wanted a small device, flat bed so I can scan small receipts also, no need for page feed, those projects seldom come up.
