I just wasted 2 hours of my life on getting this movie to play on my Sony BDP-S550.
I normally don't have the memory card installed in the player, nor do I have it hooked up to the internet. I have no use for bluray live. Couldn't care less.
However, after farting around about 3 weeks ago with this player and doing a firmware update just so I could play another movie I thought I was done.
Not if you want to play Crank 2, oh no....lets jump through some hoops shall we?
First let's try playing the movie. Hmmm a High Voltage box with a status bar then....1/3 of the right hand side of the high voltage box and a postage stamp sized conjoined video window with the previews playing. Yeah, great.
Step one, take disk out back and shoot it....
No wait...
Step 1. Turn off the player
Step 2. Insert memory card
Step 3. connect internet
Step 4. configure internet via DHCP
Step 5. insert favorite curse words here while DHCP fails to get IP address
Step 6. open windows goto RUN type CMD and do and ipconfig to see what your internal network uses for IP address and Subnet mask, use a number that's a couple higher than the one you see listed there eg 192.168.2.123
Step 7. You'll also need your DNS server. Just use googles 8.8.8.8, enter this into your players static IP address
Step 8. Select the disk from the menu and play it.
You should now have Crank 2 playing all the way to the Menu.
Step 9. turn the damned thing off and goto bed, it's too late to watch a frakin' movie it's past 5am!
Step 10. When you wake up give Lionsgate films a call and tell them what a damned fine job they did authoring this disk.

How's the cheese? Actually, IIRC there is a thread on Blu-ray forums whereby it seems like one particular studio (releasing BD's) is providing the most troublesome incidents. Also, I think someone on there said his copy of Crank 2 was a problem as well.

BR must be aware if you have had a hard time in the past...and then sh*t on you some more.
I will say it again. I have never had any BR issues and I have only updated firmware once! (and that was after reading on forums that it would help with audio quality or some nonsense)

Thanks for the heads up. I also use a BDP-S550 and had trouble with Fringe Season 2. I couldn't get through any of the discs without the thing hanging up and crashing. This is the first time I've had trouble viewing a disc. Like you I don't have this thing hooked up to the internet so it became a pain the in the @ss. I did the firmware upgrade and how I'm back in business. Unfortunately I lost and evening of enjoyment but oh well.....welcome to the digital age.

Sounds like that Sony BD player is a pain in the ass.
Sell it and get a PS3, connect it to the internet. Problem solved.
I've had a PS3 for a couple of years and played (literally) hundreds of BD's without fail.

Trading the S550 in for a PS3 has crossed my mind more than a few times. It's honestly what I was considering from the beginning but at the time I was looking for a player with analog audio output and the S550 was perfect. Now that I don't need the analog audio outs I'm going to consider the switch.

I have a PS3 no way to get the 5.1/7.1 analog audio out. That's why I specifically bought the 'S550, so I could integrate it into my existing system

I've owned the PS3, LG players (370 and 570), and Samsung players (1590, 1600, 3600).
The PS3 always had to be updated but would always come through and play.
The LG gave me a few problems with software not related to BR playback and the Samsung's haven't given me one problem.
