My ability to be stubborn is legendary--according to the wife. Ok, maybe there is some truth to it, but she ain't very domesticated either (at least she poo's where she is supposed to ).
So, I am looking for someone that can perform some sewing services. I want to create some flat panels out of fabric that act as upper and lower valances for the screen. I've matched the fabric available to that of the fabric on the screen frame, which is a form of black velvet. Price of material is reasonable, but finding someone to perform the sewing seems to be a big challenge in my neck of the woods.
A couple of months ago I was following along the mrs (like a good lap dog) in the mall and noticed a sewing and tailoring shop. I went in and the women running the business didn't speak a lick of English (ahem, Engrish). And I didn't speak a lick of Chinese (of any variety). As a result, discussing what I was looking for, price, etc., was a complete bust. And no, I do not know of anyone locally that can help speak for me.
Ok, I go farther away from my home and find another place in another mall and the shop owner speaks minimal English (ahem, Engrish). She wants me to draw out what I am looking for in plans with measurements and all detail and then she can give me a price. Must do this ....
Anyway, I've gone to places like Joann Fabric and Hobby Lobby that sell fabric (including the exact material I am planning on using) and no luck finding someone that can provide basic sewing services AND be communicated with. Seems that plenty of people buy fabric, sew for their own needs, but are not willing to offer services to someone in my situation.
And yes, I've almost contemplated biting the bullet and buying a sewing machine to become the Wan Sewing Company. Anyone locally (CONUS) have the ability themselves, or through the good nature of their significant other have this ability? I do not mind paying someone.
BTW, I have not yet come up with a solution on how to hang the panels once created. Nothing elaborate is being sought and even the most simple of solutions is fine. Any takers?

Wan,
That is the problem of being in the Asian Nation!
IIRC there is a place over by the Whole Foods near Peachtree Pkwy and State Bridge that should be able to handle it. They are Chinese, but the girl handling the counter speaks Engrish.

Or, post on Craigslist. Despite a crapload of morons being on there as well, there are some good hard working people that cater to the custom work, usually at pretty reasonable prices.

Ok, maybe its my brain being lazy. First, I never thought to try services on CL, but even that found two options on the other side of Atlanta (think +hour drive). Then the brain woke up (and light bulb came on), which got me to look up seamstress in the f-ing yellow pages (and I work for the phone company, duh!). Going to talk to one now ...

I totally forgot about that Curt. That is a great idea. I had a buddy who would post what he wanted and the price he was willing to pay for services. He said he never had a problem finding someone handle the jobs he wanted done.
