|
|
Hello,
see subject. I have been trying to figure out how to achieve this. The issue I have is that (I think) I cannot install the tubes without removing the top cover plate. That means that the tubes are only held by 2 bolts (the ones with a spring) in the bottom plate. However, each of those bolts holds two tubes (the green and either red or blue).
The only way I have come up with is: install the green using one bolt. Install red or blue using the other bolt. Then remove the first bolt and install blue or red. But then I will have two tubes hanging from one bolt... That thought scares me a bit
Any suggestions?
Gerbrand

That sounds like the older style tubes without the bellows.
What you have suggested is about the only way to do it
I use a reasonable size safety cable tie around say the scan coils and a length of string to stop the tube falling too far if disaster strikes.
The true 1209s tubes with the two lugs/ pins are a dream to change, the lenses don't even come off. just 4 bolts on the front.
Normally you will have to adjust the schiemphlug to minimum to make the end cap clear the chassis

In BG1200 tube rack there is those two round holes in top plate for removing those two spring bolts with long key.
So it's possible to remove all tubes with top plate, it's pretty heavy so some extra hands are needed.
Here's rack installed to 808s chassis.

Getting on for20 years I've been doing this and thought " I can't believe it is that simple"
It's been a while since I worked on a 1200 but certainly the 1209 and 1209s that I have here no longer have that feature.
The whole side of the tube housing is one unit as your 808 would have been.
Great adaptation though

Thanks for your help. I have the tube replacement manual of a BR909 here somewhere and I already saw that life is much easier for the newer tubes. But unfortunately I have the old type without bellows.
So basically I have two options:
1) Have the tubes hanging from one bolt, but use some security rope
2) Install the tubes with the top plate attached. To my mind this is almost as heavy as lifting the whole thing...
I asked this question because I wanted to avoid lifting the whole projector to the ceiling.
I will think about it a bit.
Regards,
Gerbrand

You're going to risk dropping new tubes because you don't want to take the set down? I would seriously rethink your options.
The only 9"set I'd retube on the ceiling is a Marquee. Everything else comes off the ceiling. Why not take the lenses off? That will take about 20Kg off the weight of the set before you take it down.

Thanks for your input. I think I will follow Curt's advice...

Also remove the fiberglass hood and that should shave off another 10-20 lbs

I don't know the later 1209s as Roland has stated are a dream to swap tubes. I am a clumsy guy and it was sooo easy to swap a 1209s tube in the ceiling (maybe dumb beginners luck). That said for the projector being discussed here I'd pull it off the ceiling.

I usually remove lenses and few biggest boards before lifting projector to ceiling or down.
