i currently have a 1252 on a 108" 16:9 screen. it cant resolve 720 without getting too soft. i have it at 1184x666 and have been pretty content for awhile now. i may have gotten my hands on a 1271Q and nec-pg-6100. assuming all is good with the sets what do you guys think as far as replacing the 1252? the 1271 does 1080 and nec does not, and the nec has EM. does EM out weigh resolution? do these sets along with the barco data 800 in my garage use the same tubes? also, does the 1271 or nec draw a finer line allowing me to resolve a higher res on my screen size?

The NEC is wayyyyyyyy better than the Sony, in my opinion, anyway, the only area the Sony is *slightly* better is in the ease of use, but NEC's and Sony's have similar setup routines, so you should be fine setting up the NEC....

One caveat about NEC's, the more they've been fudged with by amateurs, the harder it is to get them looking good, and if someone's touched the reference mechanical white balance, the set could be impossible to return to looking good. So hope for untouched innards on the NEC.

The EM focus and electronic astig control on the NEC make it way, way, way sharper than your Sony, you'll be shocked at how much sharper it is. The Sony looks like watching through gauze compared to the NEC....Also, the NEC's lenses are color filtered, not just color corrected, they should provide you with the potential for more accurate color reproduction. And even though the Sony has physically, slightly larger tube faces, the NEC will put out more light...

The Sony's all use the same tubes, and I *think* they are the same as the Barco, but with different HV leads, the NEC's tubes are only used by the NEC PG and PG Plus's(6/9000's and 6/9100's).

PS: The Sony is capable of a higher scan rate, which means it can DISPLAY a higher resolution, but the NEC can easily best it in what it can actually RESOLVE. The only drawback to the NEC is it can have problems with normal, commercially used 1080p HD signals.

Yes, assuming good tube condition, the PG-6 is a much better projector and there is no reason at all it won't throw a much nicer picture at both 720p and 1080i.

awesome, the nec is almost completely secured. i will ofcourse have to remove the lenses to check the tube faces. any links anywhere showing nec lens removal? or is there anything i need to know making it abnormally different than the 1252? how about how to quickly show the sets hours?

There is 4 screws per lens, its easy as it can be, two screws for the lid, two screws each side for the front lens trim plate, then the 4 screws per lens.

The NEC will sh*t on the Sony, and the 6PG will do 1080i, and will be nice and sharp with no flicker that i can see, i have a 9PG and use 1080i for bluray, straight from the bluray player i had given to me into the HD Fury 3 and to the 9PG, perfect picture Wink

bad news, the NEC is dead. looking into the blue tube i can see a crack and remnants of fluid. green looks to be burnt, cant tell on the red tube. theres spillage of what looks like coffe on the top circuit board. unit doesnt power up. what a shame. is there any parts here of any use to me? lenses maybe? Curt, you want it?

The reason itll be dead will more than likely be its had a drink of its own glycol from that tube that is cracked, and highly likely cause they hadnt been bled and suffered too much pressure in the cooling chamber.

Regnad,

Did you pay for the NEC? if you did I would take it back because it wasn't even close to what you were probably expecting for condition. A machine with glycol damage is almost (In my own opinion) not even worth trying to fix, glycol corrodes anything it touches and a circuit board is glycol heaven.

with a cracked tube it makes it even more difficult to justify repairing, tubes are expensive when no one is offering them, however once in a while you may get lucky and find someone selling one reasonably cheap.

That really sucks to hear though man, an NEC would have been a nice considerable upgrade from the 1271Q.

I wish you luck in your decisions! PS... how does the deflection board on that unit look? (the board on top of the red and green tubes that hinges up), does it look reasonably good, not really dirty or anything else major?

I have a 9PG here that is still crying out for some electrolove repair Razz

REG, I'd take some boards out of it if you are scrapping it. It's not worth shipping complete. If you can't get your money back from the seller, the color corrected lenses should be worth $100 here and if the green tube is mint or close to it, probably $100 for it as well. I'd give you something for the boards.

Jeremy, I'm not sure that the PG+ board would work in a plain PG set. The 8(?) digit part number below the PWC number needs to match exactly, or you can get all sorts of strange issues.

i dont have anything in the set. i noticed the damage after putting the beast in my truck. i told the guy it was dead and i wasnt really interested in it, but that he may could part it out. he just wanted it gone so he gave it to me. i didnt really want it but thought maybe i could make a buck on some of the parts. unfortunatly i have no way to test. is there a correct way to part this out here? Curt, i assume you get first dibs? im willing to do whatever test can be done on any of the boards...
