Ok, I have now verified why you dont buy 11 year old LCD projectors, especially fairly used ones at that too!

I knew the fan was going out since it was grinding away, but Im just wondering if this new-ish issue is related?

The projector has one fan going out and after being on (even in standby) the projector just loses all power and wont power on until I unplug it let it sit for 10 seconds and plug it in. It will then work for a few minutes if running then shuts off all the way again, in standby it takes a while to shut off.

I am thinking the projector is detecting the worn out fan and shutting down to prevent further damage?

If related, I need a 60mm fan thats about 3/4" thick, I dont know specifically what size it is at the moment.., does anyone know where I can get one?

If a new fan fixes both the sound and power issue (Im sure it will fix the former:)) then this thing is actually worth keeping around, it has great color (not outstanding, like my CRT PJs Mr. Green ) white is shockingly white for the amount of bulbs this thing has probably been through, and hasn't yellowed the panels.

As for the dichroics being off, it is because of the foam tape they used to hold the mirrors in place, they have obviously deteriorated from all of the usage it has seen, thus the mirrors moving around and misaligning the colors. When tapped in place they will stay as long as the projector isn't moved. I dont suppose anyone would know where I'd be able to get this foam tape to replace on the dichroics?

Its a digital yes, its old, yes, its only XGA, for what I need it for it would be worth a good used $100 LCD (as I did with one I just bought) that didnt have any issues at all, so sticking some cash into this thing since I got it practically free, and it DOOOES to some extent work like it should, I'd like to keep it around.

Thank you all Smile

</end rant>

Not at all, we just don't want to be known for 10 year old digitals. Smile

Problem could be about anywhere, and that's the problem, there's probably no service info on the unit out there.

-bad power supply
-bad capacitor somewhere
-clogged filter
-bad thermal sensor
-bad fan

The list goes on.

Macgyver is out of commission for a while, so he would be the guy to answer this...

Yep. They will shut themselves down if there's a problem with fans or temperature. There's sensors in there for both.

Thanks mike, thats what I was assuming, the fan is toast, it sounds bad and it works its fins off moving so that would make sense.

as far as other issues, the unit wasn't really that dusty inside but I blew the whole thing out, the filters have deteriorated after 10+ years so they are non existant, capacitors are in excellent shape as far as buldging (unlike modern caps)

The unit works fine otherwise, stable as a rock, the bulb doesn't even flicker and its near its end of life.

Mike do you know where I could find such a fan for the PJ new?

Also does anyone know where I could get the foam tape for the dichroics?

Thanks again!!

It is almost certainly shutting down due to overheating or simply fan failure (if it monitors fan speed). Don't use the thing again until you fix that fan... overheating is bad, which is why it is shutting down to protect itself!

60 mm fans are somtimes used in computers, especially rack-mount servers. you should be able to find some at a decent computer shop, one that sell servers is even better. In this small-ish size they can be loud, and usually there is a trade-off between noise and CFM (airflow). Fortunately, people are less willing to live with loud computers, so any good fan will have both noise and CFM ratings right on the box.

Thats pretty much what I suspect Aaron, I won't be using it until I get a new fan for it. Theres a parts PJ like this on ebay, has a few problems such as no bulb and something else. If I can get it cheap Ill have a set of fans to last the 7500C the rest of its usable life.
