For another use I just purchased a GIGABYTE GA-880GA-UD3H mother board.

Wow! on-board ATI HD4250 integrated GPU, DVI and HDMI 1080p performance, at least on paper.

I don't game on the HTPC, just video/DVD and soon Blu-Ray.

So are onboard graphics to the point I now get rid of my old ATI 9700Pro? Can these on-board GPUs drive 25-30ft long video cables?

Video will be fine. If you want to "Bitstream" HD-Audio to your AVR over HDMI, it's not up to task. It does not have support for protected audio path, which is required to bitstream across HDMI.

I would think ANY video card produced in the last two years would be better than the 9700Pro...when was that thing made?!

I bought my 9700 Pro in 2004 on clearance. It's a c.2002 vintage card

That's about when I bought it.

What would I need for blu-Ray playback? 5XXX 4XXX 3XXX ATI? Something that has passive cooling no fans.

I'm a total HTPC fan...But to to be honest if all you want to do is watch Blu-ray and DVD. Just get a PS3, if you want to rip to a media server or use the HTPC for timeshifting OTA-HD, then the HTPC is a good way to go.

I'm still in the HTPC camp. I like the player, DVR, online streaming aspects. I run multiple tuners in it, can't do that with PS3 Smile

I have two issue with the current rig, age and heat. My though is to replace or eliminate the graphics card (ie. onboard GPU) or a newer version that generates less heat and is passively cooled for less noise.

newegg has some good ati 4000 series cards that are fanless and half height brackets if you have a thin case. About $25 - $35 shipped.

they work great for playing blurays with DXVA. I would guess you'll have DXVA problems like most using an integrated graphics. Or maybe not, it's a toss up. Just don't expect it to work out perfectly.

I LOVE the gigabyte boards. They're super stable and priced well.

They are also very good if you want to build a hackintosh:
