Hey everyone,

Im sure this problem has been solved by someone here at some point and I am hoping someone has an exact answer to it.

my 9PG Xtra's convergence on the green tube shifted left and right after about 4 hours of use tonight, and did it for about a half hour then stopped and stabilized back to normal...

Is this a deflection board issue or a convergence board issue? If its the deflection board would it be the Toshiba transistor? The machine is a NOS Xtra and all the parts inside are in immaculate condition physically, any help is appriciated Smile

What is an NOS Xtra? Is it an NEC PG Xtra or not?

My 9PG did this a few months ago, was fixed when i replaced a heap of def board capacitors, a few of which were leaking and eating the board. All the leakers were the Nichicon brand, the Rubycons were all ok.

Bad connections on the horizontal deflection yoke connectors can cause what you describe. Try unplugging and replugging a few times and/or clean with some type of contact cleaner.

Scott I will try that! Thanks (it has been sitting for 14 years Razz)

Case, NOS means New never used in new condition but an older item such as my Xtra, it is in new and unused physical condition and almost ALMOST works like new, if I get this issue straightened out I think Ill have it kicked Very Happy

I had a 700 hour PG here last year. Minty mint, zero wear. I spent 6 hours replacing various bad parts, and then it still crapped out at the customer's place while I was installing it. I'd missed one bad cap on one board...

Curt what would be the most important board(s) to replace the capacitors on with new ones?

Also I noticed the tube models in the Xtra are rather similar to whats in my XG (just the tube #'s are 1 higher like P16LJE09RJA in the Xtra vs my P16LJE08RJA in the XG.... are these Xtra tubes compatible with my XG?? Very Happy (note: I probably wont take them out even if they are compatible, but its nice to know I have a backup)

Any pointers would help Curt Rolling Eyes

My ~900hrs old 9pg xtra killed it's def board too... and the DCPC CTL board still has some problem.
The def board and convergence boards are the most sensitive -as I know.
There is mentioned on the site, that only the green tube will work in an XG

Are all the tubes in your XG 08's? Mine has an 06 Blue and 07 R & G. My Xtra has an 08 G. The 09's are 20mm shorter but otherwise identical to the 08's from what I've been told. They are used for R & B in the Xtra.

No I beleive the green tube is an 07, but as gjaky said the green tube from the Xtra is the only one that would probably work in the XG. I saw this elswhere on the forum too.

Its a bummer if you cant swap all 3 alright, having mint tubes in my XG would make it even schweeter Very Happy

however, having one nice XG and one new PG Xtra are more entertaining, Ill be taking the Xtra and throwing it up onto the ceiling in the living room here and taking the direct view sony CRT and putting that in another room.

speaking of which, how far away from the screen does the Xtra have to be for a 110" 16:9 screen? my XG is actually on a smaller screen than that due to dimensional restrictions of my theater room (almost too embarassed to say what size it is because you'll all laugh! Razz)

also just an update, last night the Xtra ran flawless for 7 hours of operation, shes coming around right now to 43 hours of total use baby! Cool
