|
|
I picked up a used DVDO VP50Pro processor recently that looks like a useful addition to my signal chain, which previously consisted of Blu-ray (HDMI out) ==> Moome EXT FullHD converter (HDMI to RGB)==> XG projector.
Would the preferred path be to put the VP50Pro before the Moome converter (using the processor's HDMI in and out) , or after the Moome converter using the RGB in and RGB out on the VP50?
My first impression after playing with it a bit and looking at the manual (and I may be wrong on this) seems to indicate that I could process the HDMI path or the RGB path, but I'm not sure if I would have better quality or more functionality with one over the other.

Definitely put the processor between BD player and the Moome. That way, the signal stays nice clean digital all the way through the VP50 to the Moome, and you have exactly one D/A conversion (in the Moome).
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you have to pay for your VP50 (PM is fine)? I'd love to try 1080i96 or 1080p48 and active area scanning.

That makes a lot of sense to stay in the digital domain as long as possible. I'll try that first. I wasn't sure if using HDMI offered the same selection of controls on this unit, but from what I have seen so far it does.
It's hard to say what I paid for the VP50Pro, since I bought it along with two 1300-hour Runco 991 (XG852) projectors, an Extron RGB splitter, and a box of miscellaneous stuff for $850. Unfortunately, there was a subtle problem with the VP50 (Solder failure on a BGA FPGA chip-which I suspect is heat related) . I didn't spot this until after I got it home and it required a $300 flat repair for replacement of the entire board. I got the seller to split the repair with me, so in the end it was about $1000 for everything.
Since the projectors turned out to be pretty decent and fully functional with low CRT wear, I can split up the cost however I feel on a particular day, depending on if I feel stupid for spending too much on one particular thing.
I am interested in trying 1080i at some higher rates myself, depending on what my projector can handle. I already know that 1080p is pretty shaky, but I'm hoping that I can do 1080i at a little higher than 60Hz.
