Hello. I recently replaced my old Pioneer 710HD CRT-based television with a new 1080p Panasonic plasma. Using the Digital Video Essentials Blu-ray disc with my old CRT monitor, I could actually set the level of black correctly so that I could see the stripe just above black as well as loosing the stripe that went below black.

With the new plasma monitor, all bets are off and at any level of the available controls I continue to see all three stripes (that above, at and below black). I suspect I need to rethink how to set these controls (maybe just use a different test pattern) but the one provided by DVE is clearly not working as it did with a CRT-based display.

Can anyone please "calibrate" my way of thinking or how to use the disc appropriately? Thanks in advance! BlueSky.

In a kind of roundabout way relating to the idea of how to get proper blacks, you have answered the question of why so many individuals, many on this site specifically, want to hold on to their CRTs as long as possible. To your question of setting black levels on your plasma, quite frankly, I find it odd you can't do it in the same manner as a CRT. I can't recall where it is exactly on the DVE BR disc but there is a section discussing setting blacks with the black level bars on digital displays such as LCDs and plasmas which could be an option. Also, perhaps trying the different preset picture settings or, if possible, removing the presets entirely going to a manual set-up might solve the problem. I have run in to LCDs that because of clipping both ends of the video scale wouldn't even show the below black stripe from a calibration test disc but I have never had an issue with a plasma.

There could be a setting in your monitor that is clipping the video signal preventing the calibration you desire and are used to having with your previous set.

Hi Ron. Thanks for the response and information. I do miss the old CRT-based set and tried to hold onto the Pioneer Elite for as long as I could but became frustrated with my perceived need for having to tweak the convergence all too often and the lack of edge-to-edge focus that I didn't like. I can run the brightness (black level) control on the TV from end to end and can still see all three of the bars in the test pattern. The brightness does affect the quality of the picture and have chosen to use some sort of a pattern of bars that progress from full black to full white setting the control to where I can see all of the segements in the test pattern. Thanks again!

Glad to be of help. As I mentioned there is a blurb on the DVE BR disc dealing with calibrating black levels on digital displays. Check it out. Incidentally, it is too bad you didn't mention your Pioneer Elite CRT earlier. I have a Toshiba RPCRT of roughly the same vintage as the Pioneer and last year I finally found out how to remove the screen , get inside and clean off the several years of accumulation of dust and assorted other "gunge" from the surface of the color guns and to a lesser extent the reflective mirror. When I was done put it all back together and turned it on it was like a veil had been lifted from the picture and it was almost like the day I had it delivered. I have regularly looked at new sets in the stores but, in my opinion, although not quite as sharp a picture as the newer technologies, still nothing out there can match the black levels, color and depth perception of good old CRTs.
