That's right, ladies and gentlemen...

It's an upgrade!

Those minty-fresh tubes are in the G70 which is sitting in my office this very minute. Along with it are several extraordinarily fat video cables, an HD Fury (2, I think), a 6-way RGBHV autoswitcher, and possibly some other things I've forgotten about. I'd like to send a big thanks to the seller, who was moving, and preferred to see the projector sold to an enthusiast at a lower price rather than parted out and junked for more money; I got a smokin' deal on this with full knowledge of both parties (one constrained by a closing date) and I appreciate it. Also, from visiting his room-in-a-room isolated HT, I got a full appreciation for just how bad the acoustics in my own HT are... Shocked

But, back on topic, it's time to start checking this thing out. It might have some issues with the input board, or it might have some issues with the Moome card, or something intermittent on one or both. So before it goes on my ceiling I want to make sure I've got an idea what's happening. Aside from that it's a matter of figuring out how to mount it well, figuring out how to get into the blasted service mode, and - naturally - enjoying a nice, satisfying, after dinner mint.

Boo -ya!

Sweet sassy molassy!!!!

Congrats, man! You're going to love that machine... I'm tellin' ya. Short of a 9"-er, it doesn't get any better.

Yep, I'm psyched. A 9" in the space I have with an 84" 1.3 gain screen would start to get absurd, anyway. I'm not sure if there's anything that would make a significant upgrade from this.

Since people are gonna ask, I paid $250 + $50 for the HD Fury and other extra stuff. The G and B tubes have ten hours on them.

By the way, these were the original tubes in the Barco I got that started my HT obsession. They were changed for ~7s before it saw any real HT duty, but still - it's a nice move up from where I started, eh? Thumbs Up

Nice!

You guy's in the states get all the deals. For 250$ even though I have a 9"er I'd still buy it and set it up just for gaming or T.V.

Here in Oz you couldn't get a toasted 1031 for that price.

With those tubes, you should be set for the next couple of years. Congrats!

Couple of years?! Shocked Do G70 tubes wear that quickly? I've been using the 7s in my Barco for longer than that, pretty heavily, and they haven't changed a bit...

and @huggy - I think this was a pretty good deal here, though prices have plummeted so I'm not too sure what a normal price is. Maybe it's $150 now. Smile

I have a hard time believing anyone would pay $250 for a 1031 regardless of the supply/demand, though - given that $1k will get you a 1080p digital. Not a good one, grand you, but jeez, a 1031?

Sonys do tend to be hard on tubes. But with an 84" 1.3 screen, even a G70's tubes will stay minty fresh for a looong time. Unless you try to get a tan off the screen.

The G70 isn't any harder on tubes than any other projector running at similar brightness/contrast levels. Here's a data point for you, Perisoft... I've racked up 1300-some hours on mine in the last year-and-a-half or so, and my green is just starting to show a tiny bit of wear if you look really closely. I run a 96x54 ~1.3 gain, and I run it pretty hot... I like a nice, bright picture. So, at my current burn rate, I should get least 3 or more years out of it before it even starts getting to where I want to replace it.

Congratulations on that, you will love the G70.

I have clients with G70's and 10,000 hours with still decent looking tubes. All depends on how you run it.

Have fun.

So, what should I be checking for while this thing is still on the floor? EG, fans, loose boards, that kind of thing? Or is it better to just leave well enough alone?

Make sure she works and if so you are probably good to go. All in all, the G70's are very reliable with just a couple semi-common known failures. Fortunately Curt is pretty good at fixing these few problems if they ever come up.

The PA board is a common weak point on these machines. When I bought mine off ebay, it was listed as throwing a whole slew of errors, many of which came back to the PA board. I figured I'd have to send a bunch of boards to Curt to troubleshoot. Well, once I got the machine into the basement, before I even tried to fire it up, I decided to go over everything in detail. When I took the cover off the PA board slot, I found that the board wasn't really in its edge-guides and was warped a little. I pulled it, looked everything over, then properly re-installed the board. I also pulled and re-installed every other board that was easy to get to. I fired it up, it ran perfectly, and I haven't touched a thing inside it since.

Well, I said a couple of years not for the tubes wearing out, which depends on how you use the pj, but for maybe switching to a 9" or digital. I know the latter is blasphemous, but the truth is the truth.

Heh. Given my essentially zero budget (I can only afford this because I know I can flip an accessory or two and sell/part out the Barco so the G70 is $0 in the end) it's unlikely I'll be going digital any time soon. The cost of getting something significantly superior to a G70, and the possible expense of being in a position where a blown bulb would put me out of movies for three months make it untenable on my current income. I also like to not worry about the time I'm putting on the PJ; if I want to have it running winamp visualizations while my son and I play on the rug, I don't have to consider how many hours are ticking off.

It's also enjoyable from a hobby perspective, and amusingly satisfying to show people who know nothing about home theater; they just see something big and think, "Wow! This is impressive; this guy is a HOME THEATER GOD!!!" - the same reaction people have to seeing an SLR with a battery grip. Carry a D80 around Manhattan and you're a tourist. Carry a D80 with a big fat battery grip, and you're a professional! Thumbs Up

(Yeah, that comes from experience. I spent half the day shooting downtown, bought a battery grip, and continued; I got at least three 'Nice camera!' comments afterword. I guess people still assume that anything with a side grip must be a $15k pro body, because that's what they see in magazines/TV/etc.)
