If I were to require an external blu-ray drive, could I get an e-sata enclosure of some sort and put an internal blu-ray drive in it?

Let us know if you find one. I looked a couple years ago. They may have one by now.

Why wouldn't you be able to?
These guys email all the time with video stuff, and a Pioneer BDR-205 w/external case is one of the bundles they're always pushing...

Looks like it's a Vantec NexStar DX External 5.25" USB 2.0 & eSATA Enclosure that they bundle, but I don't see why any decent eSATA/USB 2 5.25" enclosure wouldn't work. I'd probably read the reviews and make sure it had good cooling is about the only thing.

Well, that's a burner... I'm just pointing out a BD (in this case, a BD-R) drive in an external case.
In your case (hah!), you take a $60 BD drive, stick it in a $40 eSATA/USB2 case, and you have a $100 external BD drive.

Again - Yes.
Is there some reason you think you can't?

Why eSATA? Do you foresee a need for high-bandwidth transport? I know Plextor is suppose to be out with an external BD player, USB2, for $100.

I thought E-sata would be best...but if USB will be fine, then I would be fine with that too.

Given that the price difference is negligible, why wouldn't you go with an eSATA/USB 2 case, Wan? From what I'm reading, a 12x BD-R can hit almost 400mbps. Since USB 2 tops out about 320mbps in practice, I would think the eSATA could come in handy sometimes. 25GB is a lot of data, and even a small difference in bandwidth would make a big difference in transfer times if you're moving lots of big files around.

I only mentioned the Plextor option because it was a finished external product complete with software. I have no loyalties to Plextor, USB, or eSATA.
Mind you eSATA is nice, but then takes on traits of SATA devices, handled as such by the operating system, and is limited in portability to other computing devices (such as computers without eSATA ports.
For DVD authoring, DVD/DVD/BD playback there is more than enough bandwidth under USB2 to handle the compressed =data stream. It is when you get into authoring BD's, etc. that it becomes a bigger concern. I might have missed the OP's authoring needs, though.
Hey, I do use eSATA on my DirecTV HR-21 HD DVRs. By using the eSATA with an external hard drive it bypasses the internal drive and I get much bigger recording capacity. But that is a very dedicated application. I had championed for eSATA but the uptake in the industry was slow enough to practically kill it. And not USB3 is out, waiting for products, and operates on the Gigabit level.

I spent $60 and just stuck the drive in the tower. It was the cheapest solution. you can put it into a usb case any time if you need it external or portable.
