So, the wife and I hadn't watched an HD DVD movie in a long time. We're focused on Blu-ray. As such, yesterday I re-purposed both the Toshiba HD DVD player and the pioneer Elite VSX-45TX receiver. On a couple of CD's, there were tracks in which there seem to be audio dropouts. Connectivity was simple using an optical Toslink cable.

I changed cables, change optical inputs on the Pio, reset the Pio, changed speaker wires, changed channels on amp, and even noted it happening on a couple of different store-bought music CD's. Then I dug out an old Citizen DVD player that Curt help me get a hold of years ago.

This thing has a VGA output for Component/RGB output. Its been sitting for 3-4 years under a piece of furniture collect a hell of a lot of dust. I blew it off, connected it by unplugging the Toshiba HD DVD player, and everything worked perfectly.

Sucks noting that the final days of HD DVD in my home is one in which the player couldn't handle 25 year old technology. I even grabbed a can of photographer's canned air and tried to blow what might be dust from inside the tray (although it looked dang clean).

I may hook it up to a flat panel and see if it plays DVDs and HD DVDs but for now its not capable of CD-ROM disks. Not sure what model this unit is, but it was the cheapest one I could get at the time.

My dads bluray was the same. Couldn't read cds but played bluray fine (different lasers for cd and blu?) We ended up using a $40 Philips dvd that did the job just fine. Sad that cheap components are out performing "quality" ones...

I agree. My first Blu-ray player stopped playing regular DVD's four months into ownership. I replaced it with a PS3 and then lightning took that away.
