What's the scoop here?

Are there any features or renderers that are Win7 exclusive?

I would either do winxp or win7. Vista is just junk all around. If you're a student you can find good deals on win7. or find an old xp license to make use of. enjoy!

I have 2 p.c's in the house, 1 runs Vista and the other runs 7. There are alot of programs etc that cause me all sorts of problems installing/running in Vista that just seem to install and run perfectly on the windows 7 machine.
I've already upgraded the Laptop to 7 and soon will be doing the other p.c as well. Vista has been always been problematic for me.

Sorry I never answered your original question. Smile I don't believe win7 has anything over vista in terms of features for an htpc like renderer, etc. Although it works a heck of a lot better! I use win7 exclusively now for htpc and wouldn't go back even with the few hurdles to get it running correctly.

I'd have to agree on this one. I had loads of problems with Vista. I now have 7 and it's all good.

Depending on what you want it is easier to set-up and strip down XP to an almost invisible OS if your are going to be running a frontend like Mediaportal or Meedios.

interesting... last time I delved into htpc i had vista...I think it ran fine and it had a nicer renderer available to me that XP didn't have. I don't recall the specifics though...but it was definitely nicer than XP.

If everyone is having good experiences with Windows 7, then I guess there's no reason why I shouldn't go with it!

Thanks,

Ben

Yes, Vista had to have the Aero theme active for the best video performance. If you are not using a frontend then 7 will be more "pretty" to the eye but functions no less than 7 IMHO. I am only using 7 because my Media Center IR receiver would not work with XP. Both are great choices. Xp is becoming dated on the "pretty" front though I agree. there is a great guide on upconverting dvd to 1080 in the HTPC section of AVS with software links and such.

I think I'm the only person in the world who like Vista more than W7*.

I hate the W7 taskbar crap.

Don't go XP, the audio is better in Vista or W7.

I had huge problems getting a remote to work in W7 x64. I ended up with a flaky solution running a MCE remote with Eventghost, which gets wrong signals all the time.

* This is of course, AFTER I gutted Vista and turned off all the annoying crap like UAC, file indexing, folder types, lots of services.
