Hi,
I have a Samsung LE37B550 LCD and an Arcam Solo 5.1 DVD player. I have followed the grey scale calibration guide using a copy of the Digital Video Essentials DVD and my Spyder 3 Pro (with the diffuser on - I wasn't sure if I had to take it off or not).
Although the guide is excellent, I had some difficulty as the DVE DVD only seems to have 5 PLUGE patterns (100%, 80%, 40%, 20%) plus what I hope is black. To be honest I think the DVE DVD is very poor and I would not recommend it to anyone else (I bought it as it was named in the guide).
I used an ftL of 40 as read by the Spyder and followed all steps of the guide (except I didn't have a 60% pattern so I just used 40% twice). This left the picture looking somewhat subdued, which I understand is normal BUT having tried both the THX Optimizer on The Incredibles DVD AND the video test patterns that my Arcam generates, the 40 ftL calibration I performed as per the guide is much dimmer. Who should I trust?
Second, I'm calibrating using my DVD player, what about other sources such as games consoles and satellite receivers? Can I just assume that everyone works to a 2.2 gamma colour calibrated setup? To be honest, I'll spend most of my time watching satellite (Sky+HD).
Any thoughts and guidance gratefully received. Thanks!
Tim
