Deep subject, but something might be weird in your setup, or something is weird with the titles that exhibit this behavior.

Taken doesn't include an English AC-3 audio track in addition to the DTS-HD lossless track, but that's because DTS-HD Master Audio should include a "core audio" track - a lower-bitrate DTS track just like what you'd find on a typical DVD player... The player doesn't decode and re-encode to AC-3 or DTS, so you get nothin'. It does decode to analog however, and that's why your RCA's work. This is a pretty rare situation, though I think...

What other movies do this on your setup?

Ooohhh... Something just occurred to me. If your Kenwood is so old it supports only Dolby Digital and not DTS, you'd probably get nothin'... Do you know if the Kenwood supports DTS?

Ah, so some DVD's, too... I bet it's lack of a DTS decoder. What's the Kenwood model number?

Yep, no DTS decoder. Problem solved.

Oh, and AC-3 is the technical name for Dolby Digital.

You can probably pick up a pretty damn nice AVR with plenty of digital inputs and modern decoder for $100-150 or so on craigslist. Heck, I sold my $700-some dollar Marantz AVR on this board for about $250 a year or so ago.

You're not far from Dayton... With Wright-Patterson AFB, there's probably a pretty decent used gear market. Might want to start the hunt.

Denon, Marantz, Onkyo, Integra... Those are probably my favorites and the most popular, but there are other options, too.

It's mostly the pre-HDMI stuff that the value has really taken a dive. What was a $600-700 AVR five years ago is now $150 or so.

Of course, even a $150 used AVR is pretty iffy when you can get a new entry-level Onkyo with HDMI switching and advanced audio decoding for under $275...
