Dang it! someone in nz listed a 'broken' sony d50 which i was hoping to get cheep, however, a astute member of the public asked what error code it was showing, a 37.... i don't think i am likely to get it cheap for spare parts somehow :'(

You never know... Price could still be well within parts range. Prices have really plummeted, so unless it has minty tubes and there are several D50 owners hoping to buy more, you might still be able to buy. Curious... Down in NZ, what's a D50 worth? Or, more to the point, what would you be willing to pay for a D50 for a parts machine? Around here, a D50 with an error code, even with clean tubes would probably be a $200USD craigslist machine, and depending on the seller, you might still be able to buy it for $100 or less.

well, we have a definitive answer, I'd pay $45 USD for a d50 for spare parts.... now to find out what is wrong with the fan, and find out if the tubes are minty or toasty..... http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=304635505

Ah, its all very cunning, when they are turned on they make almost no light at all, so if you have spent 3 hours watching a movie you can turn on the lights and they come on without blinding you and then over the following few minutes come up to a useful level of light - Auto dimmer by default!
