Does this look familiar?!
How in the world was this methodology overlooked when the HDMI cable was introduced?!
I think in the end it is a way better solution to the problem but it just pisses me off that they can repurpose something that was widely available at the time the HDMI cable was introduced for the same damn purpose...all of that new gear you just bought...well whatever.

Well, DVI (not Cat5) was the video standard for digital connections before HDMI. One of the design goals of HDMI was to be electrically compatible with DVI. I don't see how this design goal could be met with Cat5.
Also, I'm guessing that given the trend to add networking to A/V devices, anything that "idiot proofs" the devices is seen as good. I'm guessing Joe Sixpack would NEVER get his BD player hooked up correctly if there were two Cat5 connections on the back--one with a network symbol and one with a A/V icon. I mean, imagine the consumer education that would have to be undertaken to tell people that that cable that they have only ever used for computer networking ("hey, that's my internets (sic) cable!") is now their A/V cable. Talk about support line nightmare!

I think the move to HDMI had more to do with DRM than being User Friendly.

DRM can be done just as effectively on Cat5, Firewire, DVI, or HDMI. I don't think DRM was a big player in selecting HDMI over other standards per se.

Why even mention Cat5 when cabling costs for Cat6 (and maybe even 7) are not relatively affordable.
