I have some confusion on the purpose of some of the controls in the service menu of my TV and how to properly set them; my set is a Panasonic PT-47WX49E. The controls in question are the ones in the HDEF and VDEF adjustment section. The service manual states to turn off digital convergence and cover all but the green tubes before making adjustments, why do they have you do this? Also, many of the adjustments in this section are similar to the ones listed in the in the coarse convergence section. My question is, aside from the ability to adjust RGB individually, how does coarse convergence and these differ and what is the purpose of having two sets of similar adjustments. Also when I turn off digital convergence it appears as if these HDEF and VDEF adjustments have never been done or at least not done as well as they should have been, is this causing undue stress on the convergence circuit?
There are also a few adjustments that I don’t completely understand, the service manual is little help and I can’t find much info online. The ones I need help with are HCORR: horizontal correction, V-S: vertical S correction, V-I: vertical ending correction, VSYM: vertical magnet correction, and VCORR: vertical correction. The service manual gives default settings for these but I’m sure they are not correct, first it doesn’t look right second the service manual has is only partial and has you refer to an older manual for the remaining manual (the older set is a 4:3 model and therefore different geometry). I really need to know exactly what all these controls do so I can properly set this TV up.

I looked over the manuals you sent me along with the manuals I have and they are the same. You are attempting to do adjustments that are difficult even to a seasoned tech. I'll give you basic answers for now and if you have questions as you go along only ask 1 or 2 questions at a time in the order you need and be specific. Otherwise you will not get anywhere.
As far as the other manual it refers to, even though it appears to be only a 4:3 manual, it also pertains to 16:9, so it is valid. The reason for what seems to be redundant controls, which they are not is the first part of adjustments are for basic deflection setup, then it goes on to geometry which is to be done on green only. Then it goes on to convergence. The charts also show you that the geometry and convergence must be done on EACH input resolution that you are going to use.
Just keep rereading those manuals and muddle your way through it a few times to get a good understanding of what needs to be done. Then if you get stuck ask some questions. But this is a very difficult task you are getting involved in but you can master it.
As far as those abbreviations you dont understand you will have to try changing them and see just what they do to the grid pattern. They appear to be mostly for straightening out any minor curvatures in the grid lines. I'm sure you will see the variations when you try adjusting them.
And dont skip any of the first part of adjustment because they will affect all of your later adjustments.
