I believe you can call microsoft. If you have proof of purchase they should be able to issue you a new key. I think I just saw a thread on this, around OEM versions of software I believe.

I've only ever been issued a new key when the key I had was no longer accepted.

I don't think they will give you a new key if you don't have the old one.

Are you talking about an Installation Key or Product Code?....The Product Code is what you type in during installation. The key is used during activation. You only see the Installation Key if the online activation fails. It is tied to the hardware and Product Code with a kind of "Hardware Fingerprint". If you're missing the Product Code you could be SOL...It's a good thing its only Vista...Probably not worth the time it takes to reinstall anyway.

Mike... John is talking about Windows... In that case, it's the "Product Key" off the CoA that you type in during installation, and that Windows uses to activate after installation... With XP, at least; I don't know how Vista or 7 works. I assume it's that key (on the CoA) that John is missing.

Like Greg alluded to, I would assume if you lost your CoA/Product Key and you didn't register it, you'd be SOL. I would try calling to see to see if there was anything they can do, though.

John, if it was me, I'd pitch the Vista disk and get Win7. I'm about *this close* to buying Win7 and re-installing my laptop. If I wasn't in the middle of a killer delivery schedule, so I can't afford the downtime, I'd do it. Vista is just getting totally gunked up and the performance sucks.

I have win 7 and i like it. I just was building a new, mini htpc and wanted to load an os without spending more dough.

Dont think this is going to work. Sad

I liked Vista more than W7.

I ended up turning all the new crap off in W7 and making the taskbar like Vista.

Now I really can't tell the difference, other than going to 64bit means I get my ram back.

No kidding. I will probably get flamed for this, but everytime I go back and use my laptop with Vista or my father's 7 desktop I like it less and less.
